Why do you post here at WhiteBlaze?

To ask questions, to get new insights, to debate the merits of different approaches, to learn about the trail, and then to try to give back what I've learned or think to others. I read postings in order to distract me from the daily grind.

Why do you post here at WhiteBlaze?

1. I find many of the folks here interesting. It's a community of sorts.

2. To try and learn more about hikers. What they are interested in. What motivates them.

3. It's a form of entertainment.

4. It's a place where I can try and publicize trails in the SE other than the Appalachian Trail. That is part of my job.

5. To learn about different things happening in the hiking community, and in & around the trail. There is lots of good information exchanged here.

That was quick! My post apparently went out before the poll.

Here and also at AT-l, I've met folks willing to help this section hiker along his way north. The help I've received has been invaluable. I've tried to pass a little help and advice along the way. I'm no expert on thruhiking, but seventeen years of section hiking has given a little insight in getting to the trailhead.

Sorry, None of your answers seem to fit. I post because I enjoy the trail and like to chat about it, and promote ways to make it better.

I post here because of a certain hiker I support. ;)

No problem, can't make them all fit. I've seen you provide help and answer questions, though, and occasionally you look smart... :D

I think you should have a note that says: "check all that apply" and add one more choice, "other", just to cover everything. I personally don't fully understand the first coice, "it beats work" because it hasn't applied to me for years. :D

I put a "choose all that apply" tag up at the top of the poll. Is it not showing up? Of course, I've yet to see a poll that didn't get "appraised" by the folks here... :D

I've got eleven voters with 29 votes right now. The tag must be showing up, or the Chicago precincts are coming in early... :D

It keeps me in touch with the AT community while I travel to many other places. There area a lot of great hiking places in the world, but nothing with the social comraderie (spell-check that for me, would ya Mt. Dew?) like the AT.

Also, I like to counter-post certain ideas and ideals that I think newbie hikers should really get more than one opinion on or just so they see that all hikers are not jerks (or sometimes that they are not all nice  ).

I only wish that this site had a wider focus on other trails. Growth in numbers of hikers on the JMT, PCT, CDT, and the West Coast Trail (http://thawookie.com) will eventually lead to a creation with a wider breadth, but in my opinion it might as well be this one because Troll and Rock have their act together.

A-Train

For a variety of reasons:

-It's a great way to procrastanate while doing school work. Call me crazy but there are times when it's easier to debate backpack companies over Shakespearean plays.

-I like to "give back" as much as possible. Unfortunately in the "system" of online thru-hiker resources, all too often people use information to their benefit and don't reciprocate it in the future, after they have finished their hike. The chain can only live on if people keep giving, not just taking (sorry to sound like a popular AT hegemon).

-I feel like i've gotten to know a fair number of people on here very well, some that I respect a great deal and value reading what they have to say. Sometimes I'm just curious to read the next outrageous, ridiculous, idiotic things other folks will say. Either way it's mindless entertainment.

-Lastly, it's an outlet to share AT stories, memories, info etc. Most of my college buddies could care less about the resupply options in Pearisburg or the merits of an alcohol stove over a whitegas one. Ya'll are as interested in this crap as I am which is good enough reason to kick around. Plus I learn a thing or two from time to time.

Wookie I suggest you NEVER ask me to spell check anything for you. EVER. My grammar isn't to be copied. English class was always a bore to me and seemed illogical at times. Posts like your Wookie keep me checking way too many threads looking for people directing comments towards me. sigh..... As for your spell check ------ > camaraderie

Whiteblaze.net is the best dynamic backpacking information source that exists. You can sound your ideas and questions against the expertise of so many who have the experience to give truly meaningful feedback. After wasting tons of money following the advise of the backpacking magazines and up selling sales persons I decided I'd better start listening to you guys.

...there's not another site where this can all occur. Sorta like interactive "hiking cable TV for the visually impaired". The sounds are there and we can speak back to the set but we can turn it off anytime and turn it back on later. New shows about to begin at any time (yours, mine or anybody elses'), just not on a regular schedule.

and just think of the reactions the guests have to some of our posts & replies.

I'm just happy to be here and alive at the moment. I want to go hiking sooner than life will allow and experiencing some cabin fever. This will surely reflect in near future rants, reviews and replies...... Cheers and may God Bless!

Where else could we learn how Benton MacKaye crapped in the woods?

But seriously...I click onto this place because there are a bunch of people who love the AT and it's fun to communicate with them. Tomorrow I'm meeting a GATC crew at Amicalola for a day of trail maintenance. I'm going to drive there with my backpack. After the work session I'm going to spend the night. Out there. Somewhere. I haven't decided where yet, I probably won't decide until late tomorrow afternoon. And there's no place I could post that and people would appreciate it except here.

That's why.

Yea.....Why do WB? 'Cause I get to ham it with these guys and girls here and have a real time of it, talkin' about the thing we all love.....Hiking! It's a well rounded group from all over the globe, and the forum provides for understanding, Trail Knowledge, and comraderie. Yes, it's all about sharing and giving as far as I'm concerned. Not to be outdone, we all have a little 'fun' now and then with each other, tho rather harmless it all is. A great shew for all! Thanks SGT Rock and ATtrol......for supervising this thing that has grown from a small group to, how many members, now? Ya gotta' Love it! KZ@

Because it gives me a place to learn from y'all when I can't go hiking. Just like tonight when I push back my hike for a meeting just to find out I have a new project with a suspense tomorrow morning. At least while I am working I can check in to WhiteBlaze and at least laugh at something I find funny or chat about something I find interesting, or learn something from someone that I never expected to even think about until someone else says it.

Oh, and I also chose to make myself look smart. I AM SO SMART. S-M-R-T!

It rained and I didn't go because I was going to Church (PHHHHHHHHHHHHT!). I had missed more times than I wanted to recently due to hiking stuff (Soruck and a hike that lasted longer than expected) and I'm leaving in about a month for a hike that may keep me away from my silly, sweet, country-bumpkin Church family for six months.

But I still like the way hiker-girlies smell, and my wife was gonna go with me to Franklin, and she knows where I "park that thang", ha ha ha!

I love you, you silly old goomer. Go Tigers!

Everything is different now, I have my gear squared away and will be heading out to the Long Trail in August...That being said I'm about done posting here, lots of pot stirrers and know it alls. All forums have these types, it doesn't matter what the theme is , but I've left those too.

This is a good old thread I've not seen before. Thanks for the bump.

I'd never even heard about WB until after I'd hiked the AT. Mags told me about it, as a matter of fact. I was just not part of the AT culture, being a Western hiker. While hiking the AT, I became very intrigued about the "cultural" differences between the US East and West and joined mainly to talk about those differences.

As it turns out, I've met a few of the usual suspects here and have made a few good friends and had some good hikes with them. My vote's on #4.
