I (http://www.google.com/recaptcha)t's cool that whiteblaze.net has gone so long without having to add protection from spam-bots.

That time is gone.

Recaptcha. Free anti-bot service that helps transcribe books, takes about 3 seconds to fill out.

welcome to year 2011.

Bump this thread if you agree that WB needs to use recaptcha.

I second that motion (as if I actually had a vote). I just started checking out the unread posts on a daily basis and am tired of the spam posts already. Especially when they mask all of the real posts.

Use reCAPTCHA on Your Site!reCAPTCHA helps prevent automated abuse of your site (such as comment spam or bogus registrations) by using a CAPTCHA (http://www.google.com/recaptcha/captcha) to ensure that only humans perform certain actions.

It's Free! Yep, reCAPTCHA is free.
It's Useful. Why waste the effort of your users? reCAPTCHA helps to digitize books (http://www.google.com/recaptcha/learnmore).
It's Accessible. reCAPTCHA has an audio test that allows blind people to freely navigate your site.
It's Secure. Most other CAPTCHA implementations can be easily broken.
It's Popular. Over 100,000 sites use reCAPTCHA, including household names like Facebook, Ticketmaster, and Craigslist.
It's Easy. reCAPTCHA is a Web service. As such, adopting it is as simple as adding a few lines of code on your site. For many applications and programming languages such asWordpress (http://code.google.com/apis/recaptcha/docs/wordpress.html) and PHP (http://code.google.com/apis/recaptcha/docs/php.html) we also have easy-to-install plugins (http://code.google.com/apis/recaptcha) available. We generate and check the distorted images, so you don't need to run costly image generation programs.

It's an over-reaction. We had an acute attack. Nothing to over-react to. If it becomes chronic, THEN it might be time for such.

bots have been posting for months. The most recent one was easily noticeable instead of a few odd posts here and there.

Bump this thread if you agree that WB needs to use recaptcha. We were using recaptcha from 4/2009 until 1/2011. We switched to the question and answer system as the spammers were still getting through. Thanks for the timely suggestion though.

The vast majority of the SPAM we get comes from cheap labor countries in most cases. It is suggested that a human actually does the verification then the bot gets through/activated. There's no magic bullet for SPAM. Spammers constantly change tactics. We get to it as soon as we can but we're volunteers. Hit the report post icon and note that it is spam. The report post icon is a triangle with an exclamation point. It might take an hour or two before someone on the moderation team sees it. It could even take 1/2 a day:eek:. We cannot be expected to be here 24/7 to instantly remove it. Threads about SPAM are SPAM derivatives and clog up the forum as well. Responding to it just puts the SPAM back at the top of the New Post listing:-?. Please just take a deep breath and hit the report post icon instead. THANKS!
