I'm looking at possibly doing a section hike in December and January. Is this done by anyone else? Is there a section of the trail that's open during this period? This is not my first rodeo, but is it reasonable to consider this? Or should I be looking at another trail?

The trail is open all winter though some trail town services and hostels may close.
Don't even think of doing this in the north unless you have some cold weather winter experience.
Here's a recent thread with more winter info: http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?76267-starting-gear-and-ideas

winter is cold, even here in the south...i'd be bringing a zero degree bag, down booties, down pants, an awesome down jacket and lots of protection for face, ears and fingers...if this isn't your first rodeo, it's all stuff you should know...
