I just got a complete set of 10 year old AT section maps. It was a great deal.

Are they still good?? Am I going to be kicking myself later on the trail? :datz

Some sections that have had little new trail routings (e.g., GSMNP?) may work well, but I think you'll find that most states have had quite a bit of activity over the past decade. You might be able to get a summary of changes over that time period by contacting the various trail maintenance organizations or viewing their websites.

There's the ongoing argument about whether or not you really need maps at all. An older map will probably work for most sections, as long as you only want to know where you are generally and not specifically. Most maps are out of date almost as soon as they're published (see recent changes for Georgia (http://www.home.earthlink.net/%7estewartholt/AT/Georgia_AT_Relocations.html)), so they're never perfect since relocs are going on all the time. If nothing else, they can give you a sense of the general area you'll be covering and be fun for planning, but I'd be careful about relying on them to accurately identify all road crossings.
