The West Hartford General Store was badly damaged by Irene. It has been a favorite stop for AT hikers for many years. The bridge over the White River is closed and will not open for a long time.

It's a shame. It was a welcome stop on my thru hike.

Jeff, do you know if the store is closed, and will it be for long?

Sly, I am pretty sure they will reopen in time for the 2012 hiker season.

They just posted this on their blog:

"Bad form" ah, but the weather doesn't care.
I couldn't find if there is anything we hikers can do to help. hands on or with donations. Looks like more than just the store was hit hard, that area is going to be in for a hard time this winter I think.

For more pictures of VT. Some are pretty far off the trail, but the RT 4 stuff in Mendon is on the way to the LT/AT:

Thanks.

From what I understand the bridge next to the store is the trail and was wiped out. Have any idea when that will be rebuilt, or repaired?

The bridge may be better off than the approach to it (which would be much easier and quicker to fix)

Glad to also read Steve and Kathy Arkwright are OK even if their house took on 4-5 feet of water (discussed in the comments). I hope Steve was able to get his antique cars out of the garages and business equipment to higher ground. He hosted me and several friends on his property during our 2010 thru hike.

This is too bad......they were well on their way to having the best hot sandwiches and breakfast on the trail!
