Has anyone been along the AT recently between Atkins and Bland?
Are the water sources at Knot Maul Branch shelter and near Chestnut Knob
shelter flowing?

Thx,

SS

This section is particularly dry right now. Chestnut h20 is non existant.

However, if the 5 different weather places I checked this morning are correct, this could be a vastly different situation
within the next 36 hours.

knot maul had water o plenty, i was heading sobo to chestnut knob and a lil update said for a nice view take a different trail, ( i think they're re-routing the A.T. there) so.. i took the trail and skipped water to see the view, and didn't see anything, and it was a steep climb up to 'the cave' but i found some nice water the next morn. the desginated spring was dry and the pond looked like a mudhole ?

I did a short northbound trip from Va 610 to Va 623 up on Garden Mtn
this past weekend. Most sources were dry or low-flow. Here's what I saw
regarding water.
- Holston River low-flow and below the bridge.
- Stream 1/2 mile north barely usable and in a cow pasture.
- Nothing more before Knot Maul Branch shelter - did not check the shelter source.
- 2 or 3 low flow streams on descent into next valley.
- Lick Creek flowing well.
- Pond/spring just south of Chestnut Knob shelter ok.
- Walker Gap spring low-flow but usable.
- A sobo hiker said that the alt route source just north of Walker Gap was usable.
And the ridge was bone dry the rest of the way to Va 623.

Had perfect weather for the walk. Chestnut Knob was fantastic. All the late
summer wildflowers were out and some of the trail (jeep road) up to the
shelter was lined by apple and crabapple trees. A great walk! The views
from this area are first rate. Could see back to Mt Rogers and Whitetop.
And caught some good views into Burkes Garden from the ridgewalk too.
