Well, its been a tough few years for me and my family. We have been trying to catch up on bills and other debt we have accumuated. Now we have decided to turn off our internet service until we can get caught up again. So, I will miss you all and everything this forum means to me. Thank you everyone for your kindness and willingness to put up with me here since 2005. Fairwell for now!

I think my wife and kids would tell me to turn off the heat first.
Do what you got to do, but come back soon!

Look forward to seeing you back soon, David! I enjoy your contributions here and your enthusiasm for the outdoors. It's been a terribly tough few years for most of us, hang in there and good luck turning it around.

check your connections around you (not sure what operating system you are running), but you'd be SURPRISED at the number of people who have wireless routers with NO passwords. Connection might be slow or even cut out, but you can use their unprotected connection. I would NOT use it to do banking or such, but checking the weather, WB and other forums.....no problem. We live on half an acre and we can "tag team" onto at least one of our neighbors wireless.

Kinda reminds us that folks on here are real and have real lives. They aren't just a bunch of cybernamed virtual humans.

Best wishes and here's hoping things improve for you, and for many WBers, for that matter.

You might think twice about stealing from neighbors that way. Some states are beginning to make it, specifically, a crime.

There was a big news article just a couple months ago about police breaking down the door of someone's home for internet child pornography. Turned out it was some neighbor downloading it without the knowledge or permission of the victim. It was discussed then, about it being a crime even without the child pornography part of things.

.I don't do it. But it CAN be done. My neighbor does NOT password their router. I've even told them about it and they KNOW they don't have it passworded and have no intentions of adding a password. Their kid lives in a separate garage so they leave it "open for Johnny". Anyone leaving it open, well, that is their issue. Internet surfing for free. Just like at the coffee shop, the the book store, the restaurant, soon your barber......I'm also wondering what our nanny-government would do if the original poster just happened to live above the downtown StarBucks?

A few years ago, my wife and I did a two month tour of the northern National Parks from Maine to Washington State. We mostly tented, but every few days we went to a motel. In an effort to keep up with the internet, we always asked the motel if they had wifi. One said , "No." But we'll put you in the north wing and you can use the neighbors.

I believe that it would be difficult to prosecute someone for (theft?) using an unsecured network. Now if you cracked someone's password protected network, that would likely be another story. Leaving a wireless network unsecured is pretty much an invitation to use it.

My cable repairman actually tapped into my neighbor's unsecured wireless connection one day when I realllly needed to get something done (work related and time sensitive) and he couldn't get the repair done in time. I didn't like it much, but it saved the day.

David, I've really enjoyed your posts and wish all the best for you and the family. It's good to see someone with their priorities straight nowadays. Hurry back, you will be missed.

Now, to continue the thread hijack, there was an article out just last week where authorities are considering whether someone who doesn't secure their network shouldn't be held partially liable for crimes committed by others using their network. The thinking was that if you refuse to enable the included basic security features, then you are responsible for people's actions by providing them unsecured access. Typical criminal-as-victim viewpoint, but it's what's out there right now.

there is a 12 step program available for WB addicts to help with withdrawal symptoms, which include but are not limited to dizziness, shortness of breath, rectal bleeding, a compulsive tendency to eat ramen. should suicidal tendencies develop, recontinue WB use immediately.

Use of unsecured wireless internet connectivity for general internet surfing would not be prosecuted by any sane jurisdiction (note I qualified by using sane). Using said unsecured site to access a persons records, etc is another story altogether.

If the OP's is still reading these threads hang in there. I'd suggest if at all possible to keep the internet, not for AT threads but for the purpose of finding sources of income. There are many ways to legally make money through interent sources and at a minimum the internet is a good source for information (as well as bad information).

Best of luck to you!

find someone with wireless or internet and offer to split the cost. We pay $20 a month to share with our neighbors

Thanks guys. I'm logged in at my inlaws house right now. I wouldnt consider tapping into someone elses internet because I dont feel thats right. Just how I feel and I dont care what anybody else does or how they get their internet.

Hikerboy, I have yet to see this 12 step program you speak of. Where are the meetings held? Is there a local chapter in my area? Do I need a sponsor? How bad is the coffee?:D

Thanks to everyone for all the kind words. I start my new part time job this coming weekend God willin'.

Welcome back. Since you asked what you missed, somebody asked how much it costs to hike the trail. Someone else wanted to know which tent was best. ;)
