Since I cant do the hike this year, would like to go thru a 'proxy' trip . I know there are some videos of others who have done the entire hike. Whats the best one out there? Not necessarily pure documentary, but some humor, day by day experience and location sights. Thanx ahead, Bill

In my opinion, the best documentaries on the AT are the 2 that came out recently about hiking in '03.

Walking with Freedom - This is Lion King's film. To me, this best shows a thru-hike. There are many scenes of just the trail, with hikers life-style in between. Because while hiking you spend most of your time just looking at the trail, I like this one best.

Appalachian Impressions - This is Carolina Cruiser's film. This tends to be more educational, and takes you methodically through all the highlights of the trail. This is a more traditional looking documentary, with some great out-takes to liven it up a little.

I would say, depending on what you're looking for, go with either of the ones I mentioned above.

I gotta give plug for my own 2000 Miles to Maine: Adventures on the Appalachian Trail (http://www.trailmovie.com) It's nothing if not humorous. Check out the feedback (http://homepage.newschool.edu/%7Eat2k/feedme.htm)and a great humorous review at the Glossy News (http://www.glossynews.com/artman/publish/2kmilestomaine-890.shtml)

I have heard good things about Trek, and hope to finally see it this year. Trek and 2000 Miles to Maine are both available on Amazon.

There will be a free screening of 2000 Miles to Maine on March 19th as part of the South Portland Library's (http://www.southportlandlibrary.com/OCOB.php) One Book/One community program. The month of March is dedicated to all things Appalachian Trail centered around Bryson's book. Hope to see some Mainers there. I'll post another reminder about this as we get closer to the date.

And if you can't do 'The Hike' you must be able to do 'some hike' Can you get three weeks to do the Long Trail in VT?
