Hi everyone

I'm going to the Smokey Mountains in October and plan to just do a little 2 day hike just to get on the trail for awhile. Two questions

1) Where should I hike? Anywhere not to far from Gatlinburg would be best
2) Do I need a permit? Where do I get one?

Thanks

How about from Clingmans to Cades Cove. It is a moderate and except for a few bumps like Thunder Mtn. mostley downhill.

You could climb from Davenport Gap to the Mt. Camerer Firetower.... it would be tough uphill climb but an easy run downhill.....

Hike the AT to the Boulevard Trail. The climb up Leconte is so awesome!!

Call the park and get a reservation 30 days prior to hiking. Make sure you do it quick cuz they will fill up up with the fall backapackers

See here for the GSMNP backcountry permit info: http://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/backcountry-camping.htm
and see here for trail closures and warnings: http://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/temproadclose.htm

At to Boulevard trail to LeConte is nice... but Mount LeConte shelter is listed as closed due to bear activity.

Trail map is available online on this page: http://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/maps.htm

Lakeside/front trail from fontana is cool to campsite 90. Then hit hazel creek eagle creek and any of the many loops to choose from there
