Looking into pyramid type tents

I am looking at learning more about "pyramid" tents and what is out there. Specifically, I am trying to find something like the Mountain Hardware's Kiva, which is no longer made. Can anyone point me to other 4-place pyramid style tents?

Have you checked out Oware (http://www.owareusa.com/)? They sell pyramid tarps not tents. The website is a little hard to navigate. Look in the left hand column for "pyramid tarps". Surf enough and you'll see pics.

Oware, MLD, Titanium Goat, Wyoming Lost & Found and Kifaru. There are a couple other companies that make pyramids, but I think they're a little smaller.

Have you looked into the Black Diamond Megalite? I've had mine for over 5 years now and it still rocks....switched to that from a Kiva.

I did a winter trip with a Megamid. We got about 10" of snow and in the middle of the night; the center pole snapped and the whole thing came down on top of us. I thought a bear was trying to get in. We reset it with a hiking pole and learned that, if you expect snow, someone has to wake up every couple of hours and beat the snow accumulation off the tent.

I spent a winter in an old Chouinard Pyramid which is almost the same as the Black Diamond Mega Light as below:

These types of tents are squirrely for various reasons---
** On smaller ones, the center pole pushes you over to the side whereby the foot of your sleeping bag touches the single wall cover which is usually wet with condensation. Not good. Of course, the pole can be moved several inches to the side but this doesn't help overall strength. The angle of the cover makes much of this shelter's space unusable.

** Good luck in a big blow. I was camped on a mountain top in one back in '84 and spent all night holding down the leading edge from getting blown away like an umbrella. Remember, Yvon Chouinard designed these things to be used in deep snow with a perimeter of snow covering the edges, thereby blocking the wind.

** Next generation models may be better, like the Kifarus. They are expensive and the larger ones have a tremendous campsite footprint. The smaller ones are cramped as noted above. But hey, they look very cool. They are TIPIS!!

Megamids rock for winter camping if properly set up. Dig out sleeping benches. Use area around pole for cooking table. Very cool in deep snow when you can dig in.
