for the solitude
for the excercise
for the connection to nature
for the escape of the man-made jungle
for the interaction with like minded individuals

beauty of the woods the views sometimes the animals just to be somewhere besides in front of a t v or computer What else could be better than camping in places with views like the ones you can only find by hiking in nature.

to live simply, to learn how little I need to be happy.

It's different for each person. Lots of hikers have posted daily journals of their hikes at:

Because you can. The other 4 reasons are moot.

It's a metaphor for life.

1. Along the way you meet some a**holes, but most people are nice.
2. Most people find they are happier if they carry less stuff, but some stuff is worth carrying if it make you happy.
3. It's nice to have friends who can help you out in a pinch, but in the end you are responsible for taking care of yourself.
4. You learn that if you are bored being by yourself, then you must be a boring person.
5. Some people finish the trip at the top of the mountain surrounded by people who have been with them from the beginning, but most just limp off a side trail, alone.

To be able to plan for a goal and acheive it.
To learn that you only need a few simple things in life to truly make you happy.
To be focused on others above yourself.
To learn not to sweat the petty things
To learn not to pet the sweaty things.

Pretty much the same as "42".

1. To clear your mind of all the daily junk you typically deal with.
2. To enjoy the great woods and views
3. To challenge yourself to walk across a state, county, etc.
4. To find out if you are able to let go of the modern worlds lifestyle
5. To spend all your money on gear you don't really need

The question makes me think of the book "Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder" by Richard Louv. We're all children.

By the way, I don't know if the question means "hike the AT" in the Bill Bryson (and some others') sense of hiking parts or even most, but not all of the AT, or is the question means an honest-to-goodness thru-hike.

I'm a thousand-mile (so far) section hiker, so maybe I shouldn't even be answering the question?

Because chicks dig long-distance hikers, at least once they take a shower.

Because they don't make a drug that gives you the same rush as coming around a bend in the trail and meeting a bear.

and once you're doing a thru the question gets tiring, good to have some good one-liners in your pocket like "i'm collecting air samples" or "studying bird migration"...people seem to understand answers like this right from the go.

Cause hiking along the border of Iraq and Iran would be stupid.
