4 day / 3 night hike scheduled for mid-October ... Hightower Gap to Woody Gap to Neels Gap ... mixed reports on water conditions (sources). Georgia AT Club's most recent reports are mostly August & July. Can anyone help with current conditions?

Also, I understand fires are banned north of Jarrad Gap ... what about from High Tower to Jarrad?

Thanks in advance!

The fire ban between Jarrard and Neels is permanent. There are no other fire bans in place currently.

Water remains a problem between Gooch and Neels. Woody is dry and the only easy water to Neels is Lance Creek. All other springs between Gooch and Neels are dry. Water can be found about 1/4 mile down the Jarrard Gap Trail. Someone has been leaving water jugs at Woody but you can't depend they will be there when you are hiking.

Springer is dry but all other sources to Gooch Gap are running. So load up enough at Gooch to get to Lance Creek and then load up enough at Lance Creek to get to Neels.

With that said, three weeks in the fall is a long time. Water could possibly start flowing again by the time you hike. Also, firearms season begins on Oct 15 so wear your blaze orange.

Enjoy your hike.

Thanks for the info & the "blaze orange" tip! You're right, 3 weeks is a long time ... I'll be sure to check back with the forums the week of. And to set our camp sites BEFORE Jarrad ... assuming we don't get a monsoon like last October (Wow!)

Thanks again!

Fires are permitted at Jarrard Gap. Large campsite there. Just no fires north of the gap/
