. . . . Fall has arrived. It sure is nice to have some 'cooler' temps. Is there any leaf color out there yet? http://www.tiptopglobe.com/skin/smile/s3088.gif Here in NE TN everything is still green.

I was up at Indian Grave Gap yesterday and was really surprised to see fall colors starting already. Down in the valley leaves are falling but they're mainly the ones that were scorched by the heat.

Here in Western MA, the leaves are really starting to show some color, should peak within the next week or two. Too warm, 78 today the skeeters are as bad a I can ever remember, we need cooler temps.

Was up on the AT near Guyot this weekend and the leaves had a slight hint of turning at that high elevation. Some guy at Peck's last night said he figured they all would have changed by now *eyeroll*. I told him he was about a month early and he was shocked, ha! I asked him when they change at his house (in Virginia) and he said mid to late October. I hope he got the hint ;)

Colors are starting to look good up here in the Whites. A week ago they were just thinking about it. Been kinda too warm to make them briliant. Need a good heavy frost to do that. I just got back from a 70 mile "rail to trail" hike real close to the coast of Maine the other day and the colors at the coast, "down east", weren't nearly as far along as here in the mountains.

In NW Florida fall is literally around the corner. Tomorrow's high is still expected to be 88°, but by tomorrow night it wiull be down in the lower 50s and upper 40s Saturday and Sunday nights. :banana

I will be out camping with the scouts this weekend and setting up the hammock. It's not backpacking, but it is still better to be in the outdoors than stuck in.

We don't get much color change here, as most all our trees are evergreens. Even our magnolias and live oaks are evergreens and keep live green leaves throughout the winter.

It was about 25F on Roan Mountain. I shudder to think how cold it was with the wind chill factored in. It was cold and snowy but we still managed to dig some new trail with ASU Trail Crew. Thanks for the help!

Record lows here last night and cooler than normal today, haven't looked at the weather forecast, but wouldn't be surprised if we get some more record lows tonight.

I got a live oaks and a magnolia in my yard. However, I also got a sweetgum and another deciduous tree (I've yet to identify), should start changing soon if these temps continue. I've also noticed that the leaves of my banana tree are turning yellow at a faster rate.

BTW, Mr. Toad, yeah I know this ain't Florida -- it's southern Georgia:sun

Beautiful fall weekend here in north GA. Temps last night dipped into the 30s. Sky was so clear that you could see the Atlanta Skyline from Ramrock Mtn yesterday.

Seeing Carvers Gap is sweet as I haven't been there in a while. The main question as I gear up for an October trip is this---do I bring the full winter kit or not? Two pair of gloves or just one? The balaclava and the toboggan? The down pants? The down jacket is a no-brainer. Candles for in-tent hand warming? The winter full leather boots or the Asolo FSN 95's? I'm going with the 95's. The Icebreaker tops or the Smartwools? The Icebreakers, thank you. Christmas comes early for backpackers and it's called October.

I was at the Gator game Saturday night in Gainesville and it got in the low 50's I was cold and tomorrow morning in Jacksonville it will be low 50's I am so happy fall is here hiking in Florida fall and winter is spectacular and I have alot of hiking planned over the next few months. I am daydreaming of being in my tent on a cool night no where I would rather sleep.

Full agreement here. In fact, I have a tent set up in the yard and will be sleeping out tonight in the cool 50 degree temps as we speak.

That is a nice Fall photo, Wise Old Owl!

The main question as I gear up for an October trip is this---do I bring the full winter kit or not?
For the Roan Highlands? Last weekend was not typical. Although it is usually quite windy up there, the daily temp's are not that cold just yet. Daily temp's down below are in the mid-high 70s this week, so probably in the mid-high 50s on/near Roan. Night time temp's obviously will be much colder. So during the day, may not need a "full winter kit", but definitely enough to stay warm at night.

Of course, it is possible that another cold snap will happen . . . .

Rain and wind this weekend ended the foliage up here in the Whites. There was even a freash coat of snow on the summits when the clouds cleared this afternoon. I was down state this weekend (means southern NH) and the colors were not all that good - still a lot of green. There was a small streach just before the notches where the color was still good, and then north of the notches its all gone. Very strange year.

Leaves were at peak last weekend on the Long Trail in southern VT. I loved hiking through the golden leaves of the beech groves.

Leaves are now gone at home here in central NY.

I can never understand why people here in east TN complain about the heat! It gets in the low 90's for a few days and they freak out!! The rest of the summer it's in the 80's and when you go up to the mountains hiking it's 10 degrees or more cooler! The lows are in the 60's and sometimes 50's all summer long! I have never been unbearably hot when I hike in the summer...but then again, I've from the Texas gulf coast!! Ha!

The colors are a bit disappointing here along midcoast Maine. The hurricane blew off a lot of leaves. Warm weather kept the colors dimmer than usual. Now a series of windy days have blown away a lot of the leaves that had remained. Even the late season oaks with their rustic reds won't be showing this year. The rainy summer brought a fungus infection that has caused a lot of the leaves to turn brown early. Fall is always pretty here along the coast, even this year. It's just not up to its usual standard.

thanks for all the photos guys. The leaf change in Utah is no where as brilliant as Vermont. It's one of the things I miss most about living in the northeast. Your photos bring back lots of great memories.
