I love my silk tops and wear them every chance I get on backpacking trips. I wear the below item as my cool weather baselayer with a synthetic t-shirt on top, and I sleep in this thing:

A long time ago I used both a silk top and silk bottoms but now I wear merino long john bottoms to hike and sleep in during cold weather. The silk top though is a fantastic item for sleeping or for backpacking.

Silk for sleeping, wool for hiking. It's real nice to have something clean and completely dry to put on for bed.

I really like my Icebreaker lightweight merino wool long johns, for hiking, sleeping, great gear. Ditto their lightweght tee shirts

I like wool for daytime use. I've found silk to be much more comfortable than wool for sleeping, because it doesn't feel as 'stuffy' and wool can [sometimes] be itchy.
