I have some posts up on southbound vs northbound on my blog (http://www.blissfulhiking.com), but I do need to tackle the gear issue yet. Anyway, when I went on July 1 , I had summerwear (convertible pants 2 wicking t-shirts) plus a few insulating pieces for the higher elevations (lightweight top and bottoms, polartec fleece). I took a hat. My sleeping bag was 25 degree (30 may be fine then you'll need to switch to 15 degree at least). Also check out the MEGa forum (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?422-Southbound-thru-hikers-%28MEGA%29) here for gear ideas.

prepare for solitude

One of the best parts about it, imo. Though at times I did miss fellow hikers going my way.
