Hello, need some help or comments on my first AT section hike this coming Thankgiving Holiday, below is our plan:

Day 1: Arrive to Atlanta around 11:00am, drive to Amicalola State Park

Day 2: Start Hike - Approach Trail to Springer Mtn Shelter

Day 3: Springer Mtn Shelter to Hawk Mtn Shelter

Day 4: Hawk Mtn Shelter to to Gooch Mtn Shelter

Day 5: Gooch Mtn Shelter to Wood's Hole or Blood Mtn Shelter

Day 6: Hike out from Wood's or Blood to Neels Gap Walasyi Center and get shuttle back to Amicalola and drive back to Atlanta for late flight at 7:00pm

Based on the above, a few questions:

Day 1 - what is a good place from Atlanta to Amicalola to pick up fuel, food and last minute supplies, and a place near by to stay for the night

Re Day 5, Wood's Hole and Blood Mtn seem close to each other, which should we stay at, by the way, we are taking our tent and will be using it near the shelters

Thanks for any tips, comments or suggestions

Dahlonega - Wally World, an all you can eat buffet down by the town center - can't remember the name, sorry. 12 people per table, reach for what you want, they kept bringing it as long as someone was eating it.

Donating members can edit. Cheap and easy way to fix things! Enjoy your hike! Please post a trip report.

If you stop at the buford/mall of Georgia exit off 385 or 85 either way...there is an rei right there and there is usually pretty cheap gas at that exit. Its about 25-30 mi north of the atlanta airport.

Wood's Hole has water. Blood Mountain does not.

If staying at the shelters, then definitely stay at Woods Hole. The hike from WH to Blood Mt is not bad, so you can do that at the end of the day without your pack to catch the sunset. Blood shelter does have a privy, but the shelter itself it not the best place to stay (plus no water).

Plus there is the Blood Mtn Bear.

If your looking for a place to stay near Amicalola, you should consider the Hiker Hostel. In my opinion, it is one of the best hostels on the AT. www.hikerhostel.com (http://www.hikerhostel.com) They may also be able to help with your shuttle back.

Try 50 to 60 miles from the airport.

The AYCE buffet in Dahlonega is the Smith House. Down home "suthern cookin". Excellent. Seating for two is available.
