Olsen twins' $39,000 backpack sells out (http://marquee.blogs.cnn.com/2011/10/06/39000-olsen-twins-backpack-sells-out/) Apparently backpacks are back in style, but don’t think you can just dust off your old Jansport. Women’s Wear Daily (http://www.wwd.com/fashion-news/fashion-scoops/mary-kate-and-ashley-olsen-fete-new-handbag-collection-in-paris-5244880) reports that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are struggling to meet demand for a $39,000 alligator backpack (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/15/the-row-backpack_n_900040.html) from their luxury fashion line, The Row.

"If you were ever going to spend $39,000 on a bag, that's the bag you should buy," Barney’s Fashion Director Amanda Brooks said upon the bag’s debut in July.

OK hikers... Who got these? I am bummed...

The 2012 Thrus will make such a fashion statement!

Dang, looks like we'll be watching the Gear For Sale section much closer... Maybe steal one for 30k.

Why would an alligator need a backpack - and one that costs $39K?

Sorry to point out the obvious, but it's a glorified bookbag, NOT a backpack.

And please don't keel me.

That is the beauty of the capitalist system - you can pick and choose what you want to buy or sell, allegedly with minimum gov'mint interference. If someone is stupid enough to buy it, "they" will make it. Edsel, anyone? The 1% didn't get there by stealing, but by working hard for the most part. If you don't like NOT being in the 1%, work hard to get there. Get the education. Get the corporate job that leads there. Decide where/what you want and stop blaming others for YOUR lot in life.

I'm a 53%er, by the way. I PAY taxes, each and every year. I've held a job since age 16. My plans have changed over time and I have NOT blamed anyone else for the changes.I don't think $39,000 alligator backpacks are what is ailing this economy. To some degree, people that would consciously choose to buy one are, as is an education system and society that encourages such pointless conspicuous consumption - but that is a different discussion altogether. As you likely are aware, ours is a mixed economy, not a purely capitalist one, and the current mixed model is failing to address rising consumer prices, public and private debt, unemployment, a diminishing middle class, etc. The solution, however, is not to be found in touting either extreme capitalism or socialism or any other one sided system, but as we have done before, in using the parts of many economic philosophies that work together for the best results.

Why would an alligator need a backpack - and one that costs $39K?

Possible Answer: The alligator does not have a pouch and not being very good at math 39K seems reasonable.

That backpack is ugly as hell and looks cheap. I suppose if someone gave it to me I would use it as a transport from kitty litter box to garbage can after I filled it up with cat turds.
