i've got a big agnus copper spur ul1, geat 1 man tent... lots of room, weighs 3 lbs. same as a hubba, but with more room.... but it cost 100.00 bucks more than a hubba.... but hubba is a great tent too.

Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2. its a 2 man, the ul1 is a little tight, but the 2 only weighs 2lb3oz with fly and stakes(not completely free standing).

It took four posts to mention Tarptents? Where is everyone today? Hiking? :)

OK, here's a Tarptent recommendation.
I like my Tarptent Rainbow (single person version) as it's got a lot of room, is tall enough to sit up in and weighs in the neighbrhood of 2 pounds.
You can check it out HERE (http://tarptent.com/rainbow.html)

Try to keep it under three pounds. Plenty of good solo tents in this range. Helps if it's large enough to hang out and cook in bad weather, and keep all your gear dry.

I've used several Tarptent brand shelters and liked them. My current solo tent is a Tarptent Moment.

That said, it took six posts to mention hammocks? <g>

I'm gonna go with post #17 when you MUST convert to a hammock.

Tarptent contrail works well for me.

Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo. Just over 1.5lbs for a one person shelter.

As much as it pains me, I'll leave the hammock out of this thread.:D

I have the MSR Hubba and love it. It's freestanding, light, and has stood up great against some very bad weather.

Take a look at the LightHeart Solo (http://www.lightheartgear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=15) and the SMD Lunar Solo (http://www.sixmoondesigns.com/tents/LunarSolo.html) or really lightweight SMD Skyscape X (http://www.sixmoondesigns.com/tents/ssX.html).

Zpacks Hexamid with beak.Yeah. The solo version is probably the most weight-efficient solution out there. But not cheap.

If like the bugnet, tarp combo rather than the integrated version; though less roomy, it adds flexibility.

Best 'all-around' solo tent I've found is the Big Anges Copper Spur, 2lbs 11oz...free standing, two vestibules, huge floorplan, vertical walls, well covered drip free door, silnylon with an additional 1500 poly coating, factory seam sealed, etc....but yes it's not cheap.

If I didn't have this already I might look at Lightheart Gear Solo.

I also think one of the better setups out there would be a Six Moon Designs Wild Oasis at 13oz, with a Mountain Laurel Designs Superlight Bivy at 6 oz, with a tyvek ground sheet at 3-4 oz, throw in 5 stakes and you're still just at around 25-27 ounces.

Best 'all-around' solo ... 2lbs 11oz... [another] one of the better setups ... you're still just at around 25-27 ounces. This whole thread is all very nice. But the thread title is "lite" and the zpacks is around 13 ounces. I use other heavier tents at times too; I'm just sayin'.

Lots of tents around the three # range. Under two #'s and you compromise features. Everything is a compromise though so it depends on what you like, need and can afford. I have a Nemo Obi 1p. If I pitch it with the fly and footprint less than 2 #/s. If I pitch it complete less than 3#'s, barely. But if you can afford Cuben fiber then go for it.

Yeah...exactly, 'lite'.

Not 'ultralight'

Or 'superultralight'

I'm just sayin'

I also have a Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2. It's perfect for my Border Collie and myself. I think the solo is a bit tight.

I have a MSR Carbon Reflex tent - it's a solo tent, the vestibule covers my back and shoes nicely and there is plenty of room inside. I think that with the tags cut-off and all the un-necessary stuff off of it, and the addition of a tyvek groundsheet, it has a pack weight of under 3 pounds.

... 'lite'.

Not 'ultralight'

Or 'superultralight'Ultra would be 6-8 ounces. The zpacks hex, generously allowing as I did for lots of extra cord & stakes & a groundsheet, is a little beyond that and into the light/lite range. What are being discussed here seem to be mostly mid-weight shelters.

I read that Jennifer Pharr Davis used an Easton Kilo tent on her speed hike this year. Does anybody have a review of that tent?

Tell me of a lighter tent. A tent, not an open tarp with zero bug protection. A tarp with the inner net tent would be okay. And the zpacks is not 13 ounces unless you include the weight of a groundcloth, stakes and maybe the optional door on the older Hexamid.

Since this is WB, I'll say if you don't take a Big Agnes or MSR, bad things will happen. And if you don't hammock, you'll die.

Wait, did I get the sarcasm font turned on?

Tarps or tarp-like tents can start at a few ounces up to about 20 oz

Hybrid single/double wall tents from 20-30 oz

Conventional tents from 2-3 lbs and up

Depends on what you want.

Light is right. Or at least light is nice.

But having a bombproof double wall freestanding tent when the wind and rain kicks up is really really nice.

Tradeoffs everywhere. Which is more important to you?

I have a Gossamer Gear The One, it weighs about 18 oz seam sealed, stakes are another 1.8 oz. Not the most bombproof, but works well enough in protected locations. No longer in production.

Yep. And you can go even lighter by using only fly and footprint.
I have the MSR Hubba and love it. It's freestanding, light, and has stood up great against some very bad weather.

I looked into this one and passed after a buddy of mine tested it out. He was pretty pumped about this tent until he used it. IMO it is def more of a solo tent than a 2p. It is marginally free-standing. It would function just fine as a solo tent on the AT if that is what you had.
