I just bought a compression sack (compresses from top and bottom toward middle) for a new +20 down bag to go in my small pack for weekend trips.

Any opinions out there about the danger of compression? In other words, can you damage the down or affect the loft if you compress your bag for 8 hours at a time while hiking?

Thx,

no problems using a compression bag for down. Just pull the sleeping bag out and let it reloft for about 30 minutes before you want to use it.

There's little to no danger to your bag, but there's a big risk of making your pack needlessly heavier and bigger by using a separate compression bag instead of using the compression system of your pack.

Compression sacks are space wasters. Much better to stuff your bag loosely allowing it to conform into all the voids inside your pack. Hard to do that with a brick.
