View Full Version : what do you write on signs and plaques along the trail to encourage the hikers?

Dear Fellow hikers:

I believe the quitting (pulling the plug or any other name we may use) is not an unfamiliar term for thru-hikers. If it was in your power to install a plaque or sign along the trail to encourage hikers to push more what would you put on these signs?
Here are two examples that came to my mind:
1-Every trail will end sooner or later, just hang on.

2-You are not the only hiker who has questioned his or her willpower on this trail but you are the only one who has the answer.

Do you have some of sentences of yours to share?

I take this as a joke but nice try. I want them to feel energized and not pissed off. As you said it may push them 20 miles more but not substantially more.

Chances are that you have a boring job or you were lucky enough not to experince hell on trails . I prefer the best day at work to my worst day at trail, seriously. It is an overstatement for me. But it is just me.

I did not look at this view before, good point if many have your point of view. I dont mind a few more signs if they add a meaning to the trails but you have a decent point. Thank you

Hike the Trail, not your expectations.

Cosmo
Good advice. Most people who quit started the trail with unreasonable expectations. My advice? If your not having fun, quit. The trail is endlessly fascinating for those who can appreciate the enormous variety in what too many dismiss as the long green tunnel.

You don't write on signs and plaques, and the reason we're out there is to get away from advertisements and billboards. It is better to encourage people by face-to-face communication. Find out what's bothering them and address that problem.

the best one I saw was going N into VT, looked like the sign had fallen off the old wood plaque (probably the welcome to VT sign) some one had made a small hand written sign

welcome to Vermont; North bounders: quit your bitching, South bounders: get the chip off your shoulder

so simple yet pertinate

what do you write on signs and plaques along the trail to encourage the hikers?
I guess you can write in the log books, but as far as signs and plaques, the only thing that should be on the trail are official trail signs. Please do not just tack stuff up anywhere, it destroys the trail.

tell that to the guy in vermont who has a wooden box bolted to a tree with a register in it so hikers can kiss his butt for leavin' drinks in a stream
