Is it worth the cost and weight savings to go with a 2/3 pad (P.O.E. Peak Elite) for winter camping? I only get out two or three time a winter for just a one night trip. I accept that I would need some foam under my feet.

I don't scrimp on warmth when I winter hike.

The thing I don't like about putting a seperate piece of foam under my feet I that since I move about in my sleep the foam will move out of place and I won't notice until my feet are already cold.

Not a good place to try and save weight. In fact, it is usually a good idea to have two layers of closed cell foam pads under you. Although bulky, they don't weigh that much.

I also vote no on the 3/4 pad in winter. I vote yes to the two layers of cell foam pads.

I take two 3/4 pads, overlap them in the middle and have one layer under my head, one layer under my feet. One of those pads is homemade from Reflectix duct insulation, very light and effective.

Depends upon your tolerance for cold, of course. Surviving one cold night when you know that you will be hiking out in the morning, might not be a big deal. If at some point you decide that you want to go out for a weekend or maybe a week, do you think you can comfortably survive several cold nights?

Basically what I am suggesting is not to buy only for what you have done in the past but to consider what you might do in the future . . . otherwise eventually you might end up with 2 sleeping pads . . .

See you on the trail,

If you have a 3/4 length pad for three season, take that, add a full-length blue pad for winter. Use them both. I also add down booties, and sleep toasty.

I'm a 5'8 guy - I use a women's pad year around - It's pretty much a perfect fit. I like the 3/4 inch pad
