no way he'll "shatter" the record unassisted

Best quote I can recall on similar plans: "I bet against him". :D

Aside from that, the article is mistaken in suggesting he average 60 mpd. If he looks to break JPD's record by 4 days, he will need to hike 2180 miles/43.5 days = 50 mpd (roughly). Starting in late Nov thru western ME and NH. Yeah, good luck with that.

Doc Mike
10-24-2011, 11:47
Best of luck to him. I think however he will run into a large storm of reality. His odds of beating her record unassisted at this time of year is less than 1%.

Not surprising though, it's about the right time of year for the next batch of "record attempts" to start coming out of the woodwork.

He ain't breaking any records with a 32 pound pack. You need to be an ultralighter with like an 8 pound pack to have a chance. I guess that's probably mostly food though. I bet he bails at less than half way. But yeah, that is a bad time of year to start a south bound.

Help me out here...... How does someone only resupply twice and carry a 33 lb pack? Lets say he has a 5lb. base weight, very unlikely, and that each leg is 14 days giving him a 42 day shattering. That would leave him with 28 lbs of food or 2 lbs a day. No way he will do that kind of mileage with that heavy of pack on 2lbs a day. I also question the wisdom of only two resupplies, why?

It's 28 degrees, wind chill 17, and snow on top of Mt Washington. Right now. In a few weeks, might be impassable for a few days at a time (on foot). "Smash" record?

The guy hasn't a clue and is delusional. Apparently, he's never hiked in ME/NH and definately not this time of year. There is already snow accumulating on the summits around here. Time to move on, nothing to see here.

The psychology involved here is kind of interesting. Not only is he going to fail, he set the bar so absurdly high that he will fail spectacularly. He's got to know this, deep inside. Why go public? Is it just a plea for help? Is he punishing himself for his other failures, like some sort of ego-masochism?

He seems to be pissed off for some reasons, possibly a lost job and lost fiance is adding to it and he needs a Move.

they mentionedhim army veteran os he might have an army mentality: things like when he says like I am unbreakable, I thrive where others quit shows he has that mentality.

I prefer to use these kinds of statements after an achievemnt not before it. many times when I say things like I have an Iron willpower comes beneath this raliy that in my deepest thoughts I hope like that but want to test it .

he seemed the same to me he is searching for the power he think he has and who knows better than him ? . If he just wanted to fast thru hike the AT, then I had no problem with his decision and attempt.

worst case scenario it was an unsuccessful ambitious attempt but the way he is talking he might hurt himself in a very akward situation when it is TOO LATE to save his life. If you race a racing horse and do not stop him he runs and runs until his heart stops . They do not show the sign of fatigue untill it is too late. If he is that wise to pull the plug before it is too late then I just call it ambitious and dangerous but it seems almost none of you guys that knows the trail and terrain give him a chance to even finish. I give him that.

He could surprise us all, but the odds are SOO agaisnt him. one good snow storm and he is done. from what i see, it looks like he has not done much hiking( navy does not mean anything) his packing list is a joke.... most non-hikers have no idea what 30 miles in day means let alone 50 or 60. i was infrantry for 8 years, and during EIB we had to ruck 35+ pounds 12miles in 3 hours, not the hardest thing in the world but try doing that 5 times in the same day lol.... i really dont think this guy has thought this out.... i think he is down on his luck and lookin for some attention.

I guess my AT trail maps are outdated since as of this morning the nearest distance between the trail and Shippensburg (his first re-supply) is eight miles, make that eight miles the way the "crow flyes" . . . more like 12 via road. Of course, the Cetral PA section of the AT is rife with trail angele stations in January.

Okay, I've been reading this thread for a couple days. I totally agree that this kid doesn't have a clue and has no chance. What scares me is the possibility that he might actually try it. You would think there would be a way to have someone step in on his behalf. I agree with the hike your own hike thing but not when it is putting someones life at risk.

Is this guy a hoax. the 100 miles in November can be mainly snow and it wont be warm. It must be a hoax.It isn't really the 100 mile wilderness that's the big problem. The 100 mile can at least reasonably be hiked this time of year, and at a decent pace. It's what comes starting with the Kennebec and continuing another 300 miles or so south that's the really big problem.

Someone with more experience on the trail than me should contact the writer of this article in an attempt to send this kid an email and give him some sound advice. He shouldn't be trying to "break records" because that's not the point of the AT. He needs only to put one foot in front of the other, take time and reflect. He has a great opportunity to change his perspective on life with a thru. Life is tough and throws you many so problems -- lost job, lost wife/husband, etc... -- but if you're persistent and just focus on getting to that next shelter along the trail, then things tend to take care of themselves and you're better for it in the end.

I don't think it's so much that people want to challenge / prove themselves by speed hiking that annoys many people. It's the self-promotion and bragging before they even set foot on the trail that does. It's one thing if JPD or AS or someone else with a proven record of LD speed hiking success promotes their next challenge, as the challenge is usually well thought out and hence the hiking community believes they have a legimate shot. But when someone who has never even done a week long hike at anywhere near the mileage per day proposed starts shooting off their mouth and proposing absurd goals that they will easily achieve, it's a different story, and it draws the criticism it deserves.

Hike first, brag later.

i'm sure its been noted already but aren't shippensburg PA and Harpers Ferry WVA pretty close together. As I recall they are only about 3 hours driving distance apart. Harpers Ferry seems to be jsut about the midpoint of the AT anyway. Why resupply at these 2 points? I could see something farther north and farther south that splits the trail into roughly equal thirds, but this dude is hiking almost half the trail on pretty much one supply drop. maybe he better look at a different map?

So I found messaged him on facebook and here is his response... he is an angry man
Me: The article about your hike has opened you up to a lot of criticism, so I don’t want you to be offended but you opened yourself up with your cavalier attitude. I have a few questions for you. 1. Have you ever done a hike like this before?... (Navy training does not count) 2. Why the AT at this time of year? 3. Do you have a death wish??? You need to prove yourself before you start running off at the mouth. JPD had hiked the trail numerous times before she broke speed records. Have you ever been to Maine? I live in the lowlands and its cold already... the mountains are getting snow. Your gear list doesn’t look sufficient. Two drops? You won’t make it out of the 100 mile wilderness with enough supplies. The Kennebec ferry is closed. There are fords in the 100 mile. 20 degree sleeping bag... its 17 already in the whites. People die in the whites. Do you have the trail maps? I am not only worried about your well being but mostly about the search and rescue people that might have to risk their lives to save you. Go on whiteblaze.net if you haven’t already. Get tips, advice, the trail is a wonderful place but it is not to be underestimated. It is challenging and many have an do not make it. Make you’re bold statements after you finish not before. And do not disrespect JPD... she is an amazing woman who could teach you much... read her book.

Him:First of all, you need to check yourself. You can read a book, congratulations. I'm very happy for you. Second, I do believe there was a typo in my gear list. I have a -20 sleeping bag. Next, you are a typical hater, a peon. Happy going th...rough life being nothing, and accomplishing even less. A follower, never a leader. I have to prove nothing to anyone but myself. But if it makes you feel better( or worse) watch the news in the coming weeks and prepare to have your whole world turned upside down.

Me:but Im pretty sure you answered none of my questions

Well, first of all, hyoh, but a lot of people wouldn't recognize it as a true Thru. The thing is all records are unofficial, so even if he could pull off something like going SOBO starting at the dead of New England winter and beating the time it took JPD to do it, it is still for nothing more than bragging rights. Now... I am not a thru-hiker BUT doesn't it negate it if you blue blaze????ATC recognizes alternate routes when conditions require it. That would mean storms, dangerous conditions, etc. But they still require one make a good faith attempt to walk past every white blaze. What that means is obviously subjective. Blue blazing around a section of trail, say due to floods in VT this year, would likely be okay. But to avoid usual conditions, like snow, ice, cold, etc, in the Whites wouldn't be.

I don't care what survival skills the guy has or even if he's the toughest SEAL the Navy has ever trained - he's in for a really rude, if not dangerous, awakening from western ME through VT. We have snow at 4000' already here in NH and more coming tonite. By mid Nov when he's considering coming through here, the snow and ice will be here to stay and he'll need to have traction aids and perhaps even snowshoes if we get any deep snow early (usually it isn't really deep until Dec, but . . .).

I wish the gentleman good luck and a safe journey.

But anything with technical gear is going to be slower by weight alone. Never mind using it. :)

A winter thru-hike would be impressive and perhaps doable by an experienced person.

A winter thru-hike to set a speed record? Another ball of wax.

Hope he enjoys the journey and if things do not go well, hope he can bail out and try something different.

Back in 2001 when Flyin' Brian was working on his calendar Triple Crown, he got to Vermont in late March. He could not proceed because the snow was deeper than the blazes, and he could not trek through the branches because he was walking through the trees and limbs, not under the canopy.

Hikerhead

Regardless, he's not going to do any 50 mile days going thru the snow. A little snow is probably almost as bad as a lot of snow. I'd like to hear a follow up to this story when and if he makes it to Monson.

4eyedbuzzard
10-26-2011, 16:57
He told me he has show shoes, crampons and a plethora of climbing gear. Well, he doesn't need a plethora of climbing gear. And he quite likely won't need the snowshoes or ice axe. He probably will only need traction aids in some places. But you just can't predict what any given day will bring up here. On a day hike or a few days section, you make up your mind about gear when you leave the house or trailhead based upon the most recent weather reports. So if you can't do that, due to being pretty much dumb enough for attempting to thru-hike through here during the transition between fall and winter, you either carry a boat load of $^!# that you "just might" need for safety sake, or you wait for conditions to improve (which you may have to do anyway). Either choice, carrying extra gear, or waiting, pretty much kills any chance of succeeding - as if he had any chance in the first place.

Hike a thru and then you find yourself too modest to need to brag about it.

(john) Shane, I found your CDT speed-hike announcement and what can i say, I'm floored. Having never hiked a trail of that length I admire your hudspah...but, friend, I worry about the amount of time you've given to thinking about the absolutely massive logistical problems inherent to a North Bound hike starting in May. First off, the mountains the mountains are going to be covered in snow. Also, have you considered how boring it is to just walk all day? When will you kick back, enjoy a beer, and watch a game? Finally, as the product of an unplanned pregnancy I take patent offense to your desire to "ake it out behind the Middle School and get it pregnant." That's just plain mean.

his response was less than friendly:

(shane) Listen, bastard. If I wanted your opinion I would have asked for it. I've received dozens of emails in the past 2 days and everyone of them is the same. Why you all gotta take down my dreams, bro? Enjoy being a sheep. I hope you enjoy having your skull humped in by my masculinity-manifest speed hike record. (not) Peace.

Well, if you google "Appalachian trail" news it comes up on the first page. And I suppose if you have "Appalachian trail" set as a news alert it comes right to your email or RSS feed. It isn't like you exactly have to scrounge for it. Nor do these "record breaking" hikers want you to have to scrounge for it. The "news stories" are all just press releases. They call a local publication and they send out a cub reporter. The hikers want all the publicity they can get. Some can handle being on the public stage, most can't. Many tend to get angry when their plans and goals are held up to scrutiny and criticism. That's show biz. But there's no need for you to get all worked up about those that wish to discuss it. Just ignore it if you don't like it.

Hiking north to Maine? If he's in MA, and hikes there by Nov 3, he ought to finish the trail by the middle of the month. I think he's just on a training hike. It's snowing in New England right now, probably including MA. A little taste of what he's in for.

so now hes hiking north to maine first so that he can take a break and then turn around and shatter the record? huh? where did he start from?He hasn't started yet. The MA hikes are just shakedowns. MA, even Mt Greylock, is significantly less difficult compared to ME and NH. He states he's going to start Nov 3 from Katahdin [that is very up to chance IMO as it depends on getting a Class I day]. He also states
"As long as I don't run into any horrific weather on Mt Washington, NH, that date looks good to start". What the MW weather has to do with starting at K I don't know. It's 300+ trail miles south, and the weather changes constantly up on the Western ME / NH ridges. And horrific isn't all that uncommon.

I think he's probably starting to figure out from all the commentary from the LD hiking community that he ain't gonna make it, or even come close. It'll probably take a while for him to come back to reality though. Then he'll either disappear quietly before the hike ever materializes, or get injured a few days in, or (insert some other reason). What you likely won't hear is how he overestimated his own abilities and underestimated the difficulty of the hike (especially regarding the time frame / record time). It's the same every year.

Here's a pic from Mt Adams 2 days ago posted on http://forum.hike-nh.com/viewtopic.php?t=4461 that speaks both for itself, and to the absurdity of this attempt.

Yeah. Hasn't posted on his site since July. Said that he was going to give it a go again this year, same plan starting Jan 1, 2012. http://www.theinitiativesite.com/new-plan/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter Right. Sure.

What the hell though, with circus sideshows gone, reality TV and stuff like this are the only train wrecks left to watch.

Yeap, the summits have been looking pretty white the last few days. Not a whole lot of snow here in the valley from this first real storm of the season, but likley put a few inches up high. Maybe more coming this weekend too. The season is starting to ramp up, right on schedule.

Today central Mass. looks like 4eyedbuzzard's Mt. Adams picture, 4" or 5" here this morning. I suspect microspikes would be useful on the AT in southern New England today.

I fear for Matthew Huffman's survival if he really does try it.

The other fellow, Shane O'Donnell (jester) is a riot: "Shane is aware of this, but insists that poor planning is part of his strategy." I think I'll have to watch his movie, wizards of the PCT.

i'm planning on a record attempt myself...i'm plannig on bushwhacking from Tierra Del Feuago up the length of the Andes, through Central America and Mexico then connecting up with the PCT and along the western Canadian coast, on therough Alaska and across the Berring Straight into Russia then across Russia, Western China and all of the middle east including Iran finally ending up in Africa at Cape Agulhas. i'm leaving first thing in the morning, right after breakfast, on Dec 21 2012 and plan on being in South Africa before New Years Day.

I'm planning on resupply in Lima Peru and one more just before I get to Jerusalem. My cousins brother-in-law lives there and will get me a fresh jar of humus. Since I'm going for speed I'll be packing light (40# base weight) and doing it bare foot so i don't have to worry about the shoes slowing me down. i also don't want to be slowed down with treating my water so I'm jsut going to consider the source and go for it.

Not to worry you negative nancies...I've got this all planned out and I am well prepared..I'm a Scoutmaster don't ya know so we are always prepared. I've recently had an argument with my neighbor and just need to get out of town for a while to get over this. Wish me luck! and if not go frak yourself you sheeple make me sick!

Actually if I were in his snowshoes I would do a hike now. I would start at Harpers Ferry heading south for as long as he could do maintaining 40 mile days. If I would reach Springer able to maintain that pace then and only then announce to the world a record attempt and cherry pick the timing to his advantage. But it seems that many of these attempts are less the well thought out even if the attempter is a super stud. Case in point, SamFox who was just on NBC Nightly News for his non-record, non-completion of his PCT record breaking attempt. But who's the dummy? he found a way to pay for his hike and an entourage to support him in an RV.

silverscuba22

Well i think sam fox was raising money for parkinson's disease. so i can kind of see him tryin to let as many people know what he is doing, and it was for a good cause. he had to put something out there that would attract attention to try and bring in donors. and while he didnt break the record or even do the whoel thing i think he did better then alot of people thought he would.

Everyone has their own clock and yardstick

Time and space are relativeEach of us carries our own clock, our own monitor of the passage of time. Each clock is equally precise, yet when we move relative to one another, these clocks do not agree. They fall out of synchronization; they measure different amounts of elapsed time between two chosen events. The same is true of distance. Each of us carries our own yardstick, our own monitor of distance in space. Each yardstick is equally precise, yet when we move relative to one another, these yardsticks do not agree; they measure different distances between the locations of two specified events.;)

As for our AT speed record attempt friend...I alternate between feeling pity for someone so delusional and feeling annoyed at his incredible arrogance. Who is he to think that no one of worth has pitted their bodies against the challenge of the AT? That he is unique among humans in his determination and toughness? What an arrogant twit!

It might be nice to maintain a page of links to the more preposterous speed hike attempts, and to forward that to new nitwits as they come along, year after year.

I was out in the storm last night and I wouldn't have wanted to have been up there in it. Hurricane force winds and -20 wind chill on higher summits with up to 20" snow in the southern Whites. All you can do when it gets like that is get off the ridge, hunker down, and ride it out.

That is sooooo true!!! I worked as a Army DS a few years ago. It amazed me how many new recruits thought they were hot *****. Many would brag they were sport stars in High School but on their first Physical Test couldn't even do 13 push ups.

I love taking them off on our road marches. Being both a former long distance hiker and a Drill SGT is a good combination, yea I had fun breaking them down.

LOL 54.1 mile winds, im suuurrreee he planned for this lol, you have to remmeber he as a "boatload of survival skills" ( his words)
Has anyone seen him on the trail at all ?? i know not alot of people are out and about he AT this time of year, but on his blog thingy he said he was walking the last 600 or so as a "shake down" hike ( which seems like a pretty long shake down). but figure some hostel owner or someone would of seen him by now.

WolfOkay, if memory serves, you have actually hiked this section (ME thru VT) in winter or done a winter thru of the AT. Do you give him, or anyone, any chance of even 30 mpd this time of year?

Without a spot, or google latitude, or some sort of tracking, or eye witness reports, no one is going to believe he actually hiked it if he magically appears 600 miles down the trail in three weeks or less . . .and even then, 30 mpd thru ME and NH???

I really belive his first "shake down" day was enough to send him packing - home. He really needs to apologize to Jennifer. He has some nerve dissing her achivement in public - in a newspaper no less - by claiming he could do it faster, with a pack, at a less then optimual time of year. And then, as far as we know, not get past day one.

ATTENTION FRIENDS & FAMILY: My son, Matthew is leaving for his attempt to break the current record for hiking the Appalachian Trail (yes, the entire 2,100+ miles) He is being dropped off by Adam in North Adams, Mass. on Wednesday 10/19/11, and hiking from there to the start point of the trail and then all the way down to the end!! The current record stands at a little over 46 days... Here is a link to the website he created before he left where we will update his current status, position, share pics, etc.: [URL]http://atrecordattempt.webs.com/.Share (https://www.facebook.com/ajax/sharer/?s=99&appid=2309869772&p%5B0%5D=1399656815&p%5B1%5D=275816752452249) October 19 at 1:19am

The problem is that he is heading north to Big K and then south to Springer with the plan to do it not in 6 months but in 40 some-odd days.

yeah, his mom has made no new posts about him since like the 20th and looks like she's the one that is supposed to update his website daily. No updates. So, looks like survivorman didn't pack any rain gear and can't start a fire. Oh, yeah and can't find that little thing called water that you need to stay alive. Definitely not looking good.

i guess his "boatload of survival skills" was a very tiny boat, a boat that never got rained on or had to start a fire lol.... or find water...... when its raining lol
