My old Helly Hansens have had it.

I need a rain jacket and pants that meet the following criteria in order of importance:

100% waterproof- do not care about breathing at all. Sweating is fine, cold rain is not.

Durable-Not a cheap plastic job from Walmart. (My Hellys are about 20 years old- unfortunatley, they make nothing like them anymore)

Packable

Reasonably priced.

Thoughts?

Buy Arcteryx Beta AR jacket and some cheap Marmot Rain Pants ($90?) - this is the combination I use and I would suggest that it can't be improved upon for all-around backpacking use. Now, there is getting ready to be a slurry of posts about "reasonably-priced" - I have a total of 3 ArcTeryx Rain Jackets - the first one I got in 1999 and used it until 2005, the second I got in 2005 and the third I just got - these things last me 5 years and I'm out at least 60 days each year - I spend about 1/5 of my time in the woods - so, I've spent about $900 on three rain jackets in 12 years -- that is 20 cents per day - I'd say that that is absolutely reasonably priced - "The cheap man spends the most." (usually)

Dryducks, can't beat 'em for weight or price. Not real durable. When they get torn up buy another set, twenty bucks.

Could you please provide a direct link to the items to which you refer?

How much weight are you expecting your raingear to occupy? Poncho tarps are a viable option if you are trying to lighten up. Driducks are also a great lightweight option, if you rip a hole in them you can just use duct tape to patch it.

this one works great. great fit too has just enogh room for the spare tire but not too much extra material. it is pretty tough from the few times I've sngged it there are no issues.

Try Campmor catelog online. www.campmor.com
They have coated nylon rainwear with taped seams at cheap prices. The durabiliity in my experience is based on washing the jacket. The washer kills the seam tape.

Happy shopping

Cabela's goretex paclite parka. It's about 15 ounces in a large long.

39 Gallon Trash Bag with the holes for your head and arms. Best rain gear I have.
