Coghlan's makes two digital recording thermometers that are light and accurate. One with a digital compass, I have the one without compass. Handy little gadget for getting your bragging rights. My personal coldest night out: +35F :D

Worst POS ever! I bought one hoping to replace my watch with a watch/thermometer and even save ounces - even the slightest bump made the thing reset! I exchanged it and the new one did the same thing! I guess my watch and glycerin thermometer will stay in the pack a bit longer!

Well, mine bounced around hanging on the outside of my pack three days without a problem. Sorry for giving you the horrific flashback. ;)

Good, good. Cheap gear is sometimes a hit or miss proposition. You can hit a bad production batch. I've got a little radio that uses two watch batteries that needed a shim in the battery compartment to work, but for three bucks it's a bargain.

An electronic thermometer... The colder it gets, the less likely the batteries are to work. And the shorter the battery life. I'll stick with analog thermometers. I used to have an low-reading analog thermometer. It had a little stick inside the fluid that got drug down with the fluid but stayed there when the temperature increased. You inverted the thermometer to reset for the next low-reading. Only worked in the horizontal position of course. Simple but effective. Until you dropped the thermometer and broke the glass.

Can't beat simplicity. Weighs nothing and works every time.

My husband got me the one with the compass for Christmas. So far I like it but haven't taken it on an overnighter yet. I will next weekend though. I haven't had the reset problem on mine.
