24 y.o. guy here planning to leave Springer mid March. First time on the AT! Looking to see who's starting around this time. I'll be spending the winter planning my trip, and collecting gear...it'd be cool to have some people to bounce ideas with. Also, I'll be in South Florida for the winter if anyone happens to be in that area as well.

Best,
M@

I expect to begin my hike around the same time; I'm shooting for the second week of March. I was actually hoping to start in mid-Feb, but unfortunately I don't think that's going to be monetarily possible for me. Super excited, in any case! :banana:banana

I'll be watching the weather too and checking out the model maps and adjusting my departure accordingly. Maybe I'll celebrate my birthday on the trail.

I will also be hitting the Trail th 1st. week of March , Have sectioned hiked in Pa. in Oct. n Nov. , Delaware Water Gap south to Palmerton , About 40 miles , Not lookin forward to that section again , U have to have some Mountain Goat in ya lol , Ive never seen so many rocks but it was a good challenge and learned alot from a thru hiker that was finishing up his 2000 miles , Happy Trails !!

I did Lehigh Gap to Wind Gap on June 9th this year in temps of almost 100 degrees!
Good luck to the Class of 2012!

Thats to funny , U mentioned Wind Gap , Im 55 and have been an avid outdoors person all my life , Even lived on the mountain in Perry County Pa. , But seen my first Black Bear rite up at the lookouts at Wind Gap , I rounded the Trail and looked ahead for the next WB and found it and a Black Bear standing beside the tree with the WB , It was on the Trail also and I was face 2 face with it at about 30 yds. After yelling and carrying on and the Bear just standing there looking at me , I slowly backed away and hiked back North till I ran into some day hikers , They said it was reported 5 Bear on the Mountain spotted and 1 was a moma with 2 cubs , Im not sure wich 1 Iran across but I didnt see any Cubs , But that was truely a rush seeing that Bear that close !!

I think that the thru hikers starting in mid-March could all hold hands and stretch from Springer Mountain to the NC line.

We are leaving mid march with a GPS/ham radio tracking system to survey the trail from Ga to Maine. To get it done in shorter time, we will have good external support to minimize camp gear in the pack and get frequent external re-supply. We need to do 18 miles a day from Ga to CT. Then take a month off for summer school in CT, and then resume 8 July to finish Katahdin by 31 Aug.

We need a partner kinda in-advance, since we will be going faster than most thru hikers and so cannot pick them up along the way. Will have a SAG vehicle at least in the early month. I am posting for my son who is the hiker (age 22). I'm the logistics.

MARCH 15, the ides of March, but getting itchy and thinking may as well get use of warm clothing, need cold weather for that. Modest, "doable snow" might be friendlier than cold rain?!?
Whittling on pack as i collect information on White Blaze, there is some symmetry in the advice, but certainly i have seen it is as different an experience as there are people. Sixpence none the Richer. You bet your life.

Taking off on the 7th and going slow for quite a bit, good chance you will catch me, so hit me up and we can pass some ideas along. Had this planned 4 times before and haven't made it out there yet...life happens... but now I am set and ready... wish I had some hills around me now to get in shape, but that is why I plan a slow start.
