I was thinking about ways to get good cheap gear and this idea popped into my head. Now understand Im not trying to benefit off the misfortune of others, just trying to capitalize on an unfortunate situation id say.
Anyway, since the completion rate is so low, and so many people quit before the second or third state on their thru, is it a douchebag move to try to score some of the gear they no longer want/need to use for my thru? Again, im starting in late april, so by the time i even start, many people have started and quit. Just a thought. What do you guys think? To me it just seems like smart finances....

I'm sure they put their stuff on ebay as soon as they get back. :)

You may know of this but if not: if you check out this link,

it will take you to backlight's gear swap. I have been watching this site for some time. Truly amazing how much lightweight gear changes hands in just a couple of weeks. The pricing varies, but if you are patient and know what you want you can find it here for at least a 30% to 50% discount, maybe more.

How are you going to connect with these people?

If you're not trying to score UL equipment camp out at Mountain Crossings and see if you can buy stuff people are mailing home - I imagine a lot of people would rather have cash for the trail than extra gear waiting on them when they get home.

You could put up a WTB post in this forum (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?440-Buying-Used-Gear).

People sell gear here (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?69-Selling-Used-Gear).
