For the most part, I love my REI Venus backpack. It makes a 30 pound load feel like nothing at all!

However, there are two minor problems with it...

The outside straps on the bottom (that hold a isomat, tent, etc) are hard to cinch up. The design is weird to me. But that's for another thread.

Most important is that I cannot get to my water bottle unless I pull off my pack altogether. The mesh pocket sits so far back, my arms don't reach. A few weeks ago, I saw a backpacker that not only had his backpack strapped on, but also a hip belt that was solely used to hold his water bottle. He was able to keep his water right next to his hip. I forgot to ask him where he got it, and since it was a passing encounter on a trail, I have a feeling I won't be seeing him again. :)

Does anyone use one and can give me an idea of what works for you? It's frustrating, to say the least! Thanks!

I might have one that I can send to you...let me check when I get home. I purchased it in Hot Springs during my thru...you can kind of see it in this photo on the left side attached to my waist belt. http://cholladay.smugmug.com/Appalachian-Trail-Thru-Hike/North-Carolina-Tennessee/13041362_56mLDP#944641430_RxxKg

It's made by Outdoor Research.

You can get cheap, light, add-on water bottle pockets that work just fine. Attach to your waist belt. http://www.rei.com/product/402189/outdoor-products-bottle-bag All my family's packs have them.

+1 to this - I have the exact pouch shown in the link and it works well for me. People ask me if I'm bothered by it bouncing against my thigh but I hardly notice.

I use thin bungie cord and attach 20oz Gatoraide bottles to my shoulder straps of my Osprey Atmos 50 and Golite Ion. If I put bottles on my hip belt, I think the bouncing would drive me crazy. I can easily reach my water bottles in the side pockets of my old Osprey Aether 60 and ULA Conduit packs. :)

GsLeader, check out our discussion about waist pack added to my Osprey Ariel. This might be more than you're looking for, but it might help. Welcome to the "I can't reach that" club!
