As I head off to work on Veterans' Day, I could grumble. Or I could remember the many men and women who are out there serving right now, and those who served on many Veterans' Days in the past.

Thank you all for serving.

I never served in the Armed Forces, but I honor those who have. You have paid the HIGH price so I could live the American dream. Thank you, and may God richly bless you.

The American Hero always comes through
To capture our hearts with a spirit so true
Some proudly are soldiers who march in harm’s way
Insuring our freedom, courageous they stay
While others come forth as civilians so brave
Determined in purpose, so steadfast to save
We should always keep clear a place in our heart
For each has a value beyond precious art
Their duty to country will not be surpassed
Please honor their courage, for some it’s their last
We live in a world which can be hard to bear
Thank God for these people, how greatly they care
Do ponder new heroes and what they will face
And pray for their safety no matter their place
Our heritage brings out the best, we all know
Our great book of heroes is destined to grow

Whether you believe we did or didn't do the right thing getting into any of our various wars, please take a moment to think of those who died so young and innocent.

For The Fallen – Laurence Binyon 1914
With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.
Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.
But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;
As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

A belated Thank You on Veterans Day. It is pathetic this neutral and responsible thread was forbidden at hotel foxtrot.

I always remember Veterans Day. My father and three of his brothers served in Europe during WW II. Dad, 86, is the only one left. He is in the nursing home unable to walk. And, 11/11/11 was the 31st anniversary of my 30th birthday!

I served in the Navy during the cold war. Pretty easy service and I feel I got more out of my time than the military got out of me. The real heroes are the ones who've faced armed conflict. Especially the dwindling World War II vets. My deceased dad served in the army in both North Africa and Italy. When I see some of those older fellas at parades and other events all proud and still giving snappy salutes, I get a little misty. God bless them all. :)
