Just thought I would share a little information from my adopted homeland of Aotearoa (New Zealand). It looks like after many years of planning and hard work, we have finally gotten Te Araroa over the line. The official opening will be December 3rd, in Wellington, New Zealand. While I'm sure alot of work still needs to go into some aspects of the trail, this is a huge milestone. If anyone plans on heading down our way please drop me a line if you have any questions about planning, visa's, travel information, best flights, local knowledge, etc...Happy to help. Te Araroa!!!

C'mon Stranger, at least include the website (http://www.teararoa.org.nz/index.cfm)!
.
Te Araroa is a foot trail stretching from Cape Reinga in the North of New Zealand to Bluff in the South. Opening at the end of 2011, Te Araroa is one of the world's longest walking trails. Hundreds of volunteers have helped create the continuous 3000 kilometre-long route.
.
Down the coastline, through the forest, across farmland, over volcanoes and mountain passes, along river valleys, and on green pathways through seven cities.

The best part is for North Americans that the thru-hiking season is December-March

Great news..... have been watching the Te Araroa website for a few years. Congratulations to all who worked on getting the trail established.

Only problem is that it complicates my decision to hike the PCT in a few years time.......... something closer to home is very attractive !

Since reading this post I've switched my January 1st AT thru-hike to a thru-hike of the Te Araroa. Summer in New Zealand vs. Winter in Appalachia was an easy choice. I've never been to New Zealnd so that was a major deciding factor too. I would love some help/advice for this adventure. I still plan to leave home on January 1st; I know this leaves little time. I've been researching the Te Araroa website and reading the trail journals from past trekkers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Thinking of trying the TA in October 2012. Been looking at lots of info and emailing Kiwis down under. Several excellent websites: Eric Martinot's solo thru hike: www.martinot-nz.info (http://www.martinot-nz.info) New Zealand Tramping: www.tramper.co.nz (http://www.tramper.co.nz) and THE TA official website: www.teararoa.org.nz (http://www.teararoa.org.nz) Pictures are absolutley stunning...and the variety of "tracks"..WOW...starting with 90 mile beach from Cape Reinga!!! 8Iron
