Does anyone have an idea as to why shoelaces are so long. Whenever I get new hiking shoes, whether New Balance or Montrail, Scarpa or you name it, they all have shoelaces at least a foot too long. Why is that?

Most of my hiking shoes have extra eyelets at the top for a snug fit around the ankle. I'm not sure if thats the reason but actually I like the longer laces because I double tie my shoes so as not to come untied while I walk.

Based on shoe size? Maybe the laces on a ten would appear extra long because they use the same laces on a 13?

As my mother used to say: To make you ask questions.

I'm astonished that someone would make a webpage about tying shoes. He must be in prison.

I can remember with heavy hiking boots, we use to wrap the laces around the upper boot before tying.

Kinda hard to do with low cut trail shoes.

He might have the same idea about us who walk long trails and have a website about AT!!! But I know what you mean. It seems it is kind of obsession for him. The result though is a nice website.

I'd rather have them too long, than too short. Just do what moytoy suggested. :)

one side benefit of long laces- when laces break, its usually at the top where the tension is greatest. so it breaks, you thread the remaing portion through , and you're back in business!

they are too cheap to match the shoe lace size to the shoes/boots/sneakers.

I make my own laces from the cordage I use for my tarp. Then I use the same length, or exact multiples of it, for my tarp, so I have spare laces.
