I have a pair of Columbia trail runners. They have about 200 miles on them and they stink like horse crap. I wear socks this time of the year and put power in them but nothing helps. Is it the cheap china materials that make them stink? Any suggestions on a good 30 to 40 mile per week walking/ hiking shoe. Thanks

High Quality, Italian made Leather Boots. I recommend Scarpa brand.

I have had certain boots / shoes that have taken a certain 'funk' worse then others.

I have destroyed footware with this 'solution' but have saved some also... use at your own risk.

Take a 5 gallon bucket of hot water... add 1 quart or so of white vinegar and a cup of bleach.

Put the offending footware into the mix and let it sit overnight....

if it survives the night, take it out and let it dry.

Stink free.... ..... IF it lives.

mix baking soda and water till its a suspension, beyond solution. soak, wash off and dry.

This same problem happened to me several years ago. I cannot remember the manufacturer, but they were "trail shoes" not boots. Really nasty-embarassing odor...reminded me of that Seinfeld episode! Threw them out, with my wife's blessing. :)

I would seperate the ensole from the shoe and make sure which is smelly. It seems to me that you should be able to wash the smell out of a trail running shoe with baking soda (per KK's sug.) and soap. In any case I would never throw away a smelly pair of shoes until I have worn them out. Just leave them outside!

More like if you live. Don't mix vinegar and bleach: http://chemistry.about.com/od/toxicchemicals/a/Mixing-Bleach-And-Vinegar.htm Definitely use at your risk, and everyone else's around you. If you don't read the link, the better solution is fresh bleach alone.

Lone Wolf, would these suffice for a ThruHike? Because of the waterproofing, wondering how quik they would be able to dry out.

Are you using powder in them?

Try:

Get them dry. Place in plastic bag. Place bag in 0*F freezer. 24 hour minimum. 48 better.

Kills bacteria. Works better than shooting them with "Lysol."
