still time to make that choice motlekj; Im looking into renting a car, however it is almost $700 because i am not yet 25. if i could split the cost with another hiker, or as many as we could fit in the car thatd be very helpful.

Was thinking about driving but now looking at Amtrak from NYC. around $130 and takes 16 hours. for me, that's better than dealing with a car.

Commuter train from Pawling to Grand Central, walk across town to Penn Station, catch train to Gainesville. What could be simpler?

i drove from nebraska to the trail about 7-8 times, the road trip is a great journey in itself. my dog loved motels, road trips and cheeseburgers.
oh and hiking :-)
i would never again put a dog on a plane :-(

I don't know when you are planning to start your hike but we go to Georgia EVERY March to do some hiking and to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. We will leave somewhere around March 14th (exact date not yet decided) but if you can get to Pittsburgh, you have a ride to Springer access. No problem. Let me know, send an email.
