Amazon has free books from time to time for Kindle users. I was browsing today and saw Southbound on the list. I had heard of the book but have not read it. I am looking forward to reading it this weekend. Anyway if you are interested you can find it on amazon or here: http://www.amazon.com/Barefoot-Sisters-Southbound-ebook/dp/B00318D0VY%3FSubscriptionId%3D1GVBN9WWNVXC5DBPE502 %26tag%3Dkiq-free-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165 953%26creativeASIN%3DB00318D0VY&kc=AG56TWVU5XWC2

I do not have the Kindle Reader but I do have a Sony Reader, is there any way this book can be downloaded to my Sony Reader?

If anyone reading this knows how to contact the barefoot sisters, it would be good to tell them that their book is now free on kindle. I've read reports about authors having this happen to them without permission from the author or publisher -- Amazon sometimes cheats authors out of their royalty.

Calibre is great and will do lots of format conversions. I don't know if it'll remove the DRM on the kindle version.

Dumb question: what the heck is an ebook management program?

THANKS! I have the paper version and it's great. My wife just downloaded the e-version to her Kindle for me to re-read on trips.

It lets you organize your ebooks on your PC and transfer back and forth to the kindle/ereader. I find it useful for ebooks that are not from Amazon, especially free books and PDFs. It can edit the info associated with the ebook (author, title, etc.) in cases where the downloaded ebook has an odd file name. There is a lot of [legal] free stuff out there. Calibre will convert a lot of formats to what your ereader needs.

So far, I've only bought a few full price kindle books, and gotten more legal free stuff. Also Amazon has some older material very cheap (e.g., 22 science fiction novels from the 1930s as one volume for $1.99); these seem to be a way for the copyright owner to get a little money from something that will never be published again in paper.

Snowleopard gives a great explanation. Hit the Calibre link and watch the demo too. It really is a great program.

Cheers!

May be it is free because you will want to read their book Walking Home about their northbound hike home. I can verify that they were hiking barefoot at the Beauty Spot with their mom.

It looks like it is 14.82 - not free

You have to check their site on a regular basis. A lot of the books only stay free for a few days, then go back to their regular price. I know, my wife is a Kindaholic.

I enjoyed the book. They definitely hiked their own hike. I didn't identify with them very much, but I loved how honest they were about their motivations and feelings.

Missed out on this one. But it's 3.99 now... Might still get it, it's on my wish list. Was hoping to get the paper version from a family member for x-ma$$ but so far, nothing.
