Interesting... The cynic in me wants to say "Oh brother.. there goes another tree - hugger"... But then, I wonder, why wouldn't they talk to each other? After all they are living entities. We know that trees release pheromones in response to an attack (bugs, fungi, viruses, etc..), so may be they look at us and talk to each other.. as to what they say about us - well, I just couldn't even fathom...

I've known all along what trees say behind my back. One tree to another(s), it's something like, "Do you think he sees that (grizzly/cougar/skunk/etc.) that's hiding behind us?"

One of the well known Native American horse whisperers (Pony Boy?) related, 'If you turn around, you'll see the horses watching you. If you turn around fast enough, you'll see the horses laughing at you." I think most critters are like that... ;)

I learned that:

A) Trees are really smart,

B) Scientists are really dumb, or

C) Both.

I also learned that the ancient idea of "Grandfather, or Father tree" has been changed to "Mother tree" (apparantly to fit with these "enlightened" times).

So does this "scientist" live in a mud hut to "save the trees", or does she not feel guilty for wearing "sister cotton"? How about the FOSSIL FUEL jacket that she's wearing??

More deifing of intellectualism. "We've got it all figured out because we're sooooooooooo smart." (sound of Tinker retching)..............

My "Mother tree" is now a log cabin in the North Carolina mountains. Some call that tree reincarnation.

Which trees? The living, or the dead? What about that single spruce needle, falling like that final comma in that buried Metcalf poem, settling as an eyelash on some long forgotten cheek?

That comfort Liza's tender bones.
Earth, lie lightly on her, who,
Living, scarcely burdened you.

Interesting video. I recently read about an other examples of tree to tree "communication" regarding oaks. Pretty sure it was oaks. It seems that when one oak tree begins to get attacked by a certain insect it releases a chemical signal that triggers the surrounding oaks to send extra tannin (?) to ward off the attacks. If I find the source for that I will try to remember this thread and update it.

The trees are saying something like,

"hmmm"

only it takes them a 100 years to say it.

She only mentions fungi in passing, but that's really the interesting part of the story. Some say life began underground...I don't know, but it is packed with life, so much that we really have no concept of what life is. Here's a little more on fungi, much of which is deadly if eaten, but so important to us (indirectly) and vital for a healthy ecosystem http://www.aucoeurdelarbre.ca/en/thematics-texts/thematics-texts-details.php?id=8

But as in life everywhere else, there's always a dark side; this one kills the trees http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/oregons-monster-mushroom-is-worlds-biggest-living-thing-710278.html

I imagine our ancient ancestors weren't very interested in fungi, what grew underground, or the Mother Tree.

Instead, they were very intrigued the first time they tasted fermented honey water caused by wild yeast floating in the air......

So I found this really interesting and I've been trying to do more research but I'm having trouble finding more.

This is what I've found so far:
http://www.ecolandscaping.org/03/trees/trees-a-challenge-of-perspective/ (landscaping perspective, not exactly what I'm going for)
http://jxb.oxfordjournals.org/content/59/5/1115.full (pretty interesting, but rather technical. I'm slowly working my way through it)

Thank you for the link John, that was interesting.

Most civilzations and cultures and most of their religions started with a feminine supreme being(s). The (widespread) concept of a masculine diety is relatively recent.

I think.;)

By the way, if you haven't seen this video by Paul Stamets you should check it out. He only briefly mentions the mycelial network that transfers nutrients through ecosystems, but the whole video is definitely worth a watch. Really cool stuff.

I happen to think that trees are favourable to people that make prudent use of them, spiritually speaking. That certainly includes hammocking, small fires, and even shelters in remote wilderness. Unsustainable use, like massive clear-cutting, and mono-culture plantations which compromise biodiversity and soil, no.

I think LNT principles are wrong when applied to all habitats. It separates us from nature, which is the wrong approach. If the future is to be sustainable it needs to emphasize sustainability, and re-integration of human society and economics and lifestyle with nature. This "stay on the path" stuff is for science fiction. Maybe it makes sense in highly sensitive habitats like some deserts and alpine areas. The solution for high traffic problems is to have more trails, so there will be fewer people on any given trail. The AT should become a network of trails with parallel and alternative routes, as it is in many places. Also, rather than human development encroaching on trails, we need to go the other way and start having trees and trails encroach and envelop human development, so eventually we can take trails to work, and trails to get to trailheads, instead of having to drive cars places when we would rather walk or run or drive a bike.

Wilderness corridors are a good start, but eventually we have to be thinking about long term sustainability and how humans will be re-integrated with nature, as we should be. LNT isn't natural, and philosophically it is unsound. It's completely misguided and backward thinking when applied universally, as it usually is. Ultimately, it isn't sustainable when applied universally, because separation of human culture from nature isn't sustainable.
