Closest/fastest to you would probably be to hop on the I-80 and head to the Delaware Water Gap, and hit the AT from there. Then just head either south or north from there, and arrange a shuttle back to DWG after you're done.

Unless you're down further south than I'm thinking, then hop on the I-70 and head to Maryland and do that section.

MD is your best bet. A better hike for what your doing. Also, easier shuttles...

Believe it or not, but Roanoke is about half an hour closer to Columbus than Fredricksburg, MD is. I'd drive the 6 hours to Roanoke and have a shuttler get you up to the AT crossing at US-60/Buena Vista. Heading south you have a very easy first day (10.6 miles to Punchbowl Shelter). Depending on your fitness level, you could spend your 5-7 days getting to Daleville (78 miles), or Catawba (100 miles). You could also get dropped off at the James River 20 miles south of Buena Vista. This is a lovely hike with a lot of great views south of Daleville.

Why not get on the buckeye trail? where there is trail, its trail-wise, nearly identical to the AT.
