Great trail town; Miss Janet's House is one of the 3 best hostels on the whole Trail, and you'd be crazy to stay anywhere else.

Miss Janet used to work for the Holiday Inn in town, so if you're looking for more private accomodations, that is also a good choice, it was relatively cheap for a hotel, had a pool & hot tub, and she will happily pick you and drop you off here as welll, just give her some cash towards the hostel. Erwin Burrito is not to be missed. Do some research on the elephant story at the library!

Any town that brings in a crane to hang an elephant is truly an unique place...a bit spread out but a good trail town.

I heard something about this on NPR back in 1999. Seems theat murder convictions can be imposed on animals in Tennessee as well as humans.

BTW, is this town wet or dry? I know a lot of southern towns are in dry counties.

I was hoping for some whiskey somewhere between Hot Springs and Damascus to fill my flask.

Well if you use me to shuttle you we could stop at a road crossing and cache it.

Sounds like a plan. You just gotta promise not to drink it ;)

Hi SGT, have you moved yet? Let me know when you'll be at US19e (base of Hump) and I'll run you over to Banner Elk(about 8 miles). They have what your looking for there.

I've heard you can still find some good shine in those parts, if you know where to go. I know this older couple from Maryville whose folks on both sides used to make moonshine. They can get a gallon anytime they want, and there's two types. One is very smooth and you have to watch it cause you might drink too much of that "smooth" stuff too fast and then it'll knock you flat on your ass. The other kind is really nasty. They say some folks even have their stills set up on their front porch today. Since they're not selling it, it's not taxed and thus no problem.

I live in Ohio and drove down for the weekend, had Johnny from the Nulichucky Hostal shuttle us to Sams gap after droping our car at Spivey gap. Nice day hike across Big Bald-I think you can see it from Ashville.
