All,

I am planning a trip with some guys for mid January on the Benton Mackaye trail in GA. We plan to start at the 3 Forks and hike North back to Hwy 60. We are not sure of the best way to get to 3 Forks from Hwy 60, but plan on either Double Gap Road or Rock Creek Road to drive a car to 3 forks and start our hike. Does anyone know if we are going to have trouble with closed forest service roads? I see what look like gates on my NatGeo Trail Illustrated Map but I don't know if they are ever closed or not. From the looks of the Google maps imagery these 2 roads both look like fairly well maintained roads. Any ideas, or suggestions? Thanks a lot.

I've never seen any of those roads closed. I'd say your best approach would be to take hwy 60 to the intersection with Doublehead Gap Road and then take that to FS 58 and take that right to Three Forks. FS 58 can be a bit bumpy in spots, but it's always been open.

call the ranger office at 706-754-6221 if you're concerned about gates.
