Any suggestions? Pretty sure I want to go with a baseball style cap but most seem to be thick wool or cotton. Any polyester or lightweight styles recommended? For sun I would rather have the sun-bucket hat stle but I really want a cap to put on under my hood in the rain to help keep water out of my eyes. Also plan on using the bandana around the neck trick to block those rays on the back of the neck. Thanks:sun

Here's what I wear: http://www.outdoorresearch.com/en/or-gear/headwear/rain/revel-cap.html.

I've gotten 2 from Steep & Cheap for around $16.....

I have a marmot precip cap that I like. It looks a lot like the one in 10-k's link.

Painter's cap from Home Depot. Made of Tyvek, inexpensive, and I tuck mine into a side pocket.

Now, that's a good idea.
The only reason to need a hat on the AT is for rain.
Forget the reasons about protecting from sunburn.
You'll be lucky to actually see the sun for more than 5% of the time.

Western US hiking is a different story.
They don't call it the green tunnel for nothing.

it depends on the time of year, winter and early spring without leaves on the trees in the southeast you'll get a sunburn in a short time

"Forget the reasons about protecting from sunburn."

I agree here. Of course you can get some sun on the AT but inescapable sunburn, I'm not sure. My experience is that if your under trees you'll do okay. I'm really pale so I think I could get burned once or something as I build up my melanin.

The hat hard to find is the lightweight nylon "backpacking" hat with a soft bill. Patagonia and Mt Hardwear used to make them. Anyone know of a source?

march and april you'll see plenty of sun, as the trees are still bare and april the sun already is pretty strong. come august you get to the whites and you'll be above treeline for days, so sunburn is a good possibility if you're fair skinned.im looking for a new cap myself. I bought a lightweight "breathable waterproof" cap from EMS, but my hair was always wet, whether it rained or not.absolutely not recommended.

I think Danner sells a baseball hat that is nylon.

True - maybe when late May rolls around until mid-September.

My arms and nose were burnt to a crisp March-April this year down south.

On consideration . . .

A basebally style hat won't protect your ears. I prefer a boonie hat. I carried one until May when the trees leafed out.

The other good thing about boonie hats is that they will keep the bugs from swarming around your ears

Probably like me, swjohnsey lives in a sunny place most of his life and being same age, as I, is gradually having pieces of his ears whacked off after decades of sun exposure. Too late for me, I'm in a boonie hat and hoping that my upgrade to a Tilley drops down the chimney in the next few hours. Sun damage is cummulative, look out for your head and ears while ur young. Also, much of the uv damage that causes cataracts late in life is done while ur young and outside a lot. This I know, now. Hat with ear coverage, sun glasses, bandana, sun goop of your choice.

My wife got me a Nike Featherlight for Father's Day. It is the perfect weight for me...

I like that Nike lightweight training cap too and have one I use regularly. The material is ultrathin, great for warm/wet weather. However, it's not a good insulator for really cold weather. For that I recommend a light beanie-style hat that can be pulled down to protect the ears from cold. I have a light soft fleece one bought for $5 that also can be stuffed with clothes to make a pillow at night.

Academy sports carries a line of lightweight, nylon fishing hats that may fit your need. Their cap features a fold down sun screen to protect one's neck and head. There's also a "boonie" style hat. Prices are about $12-14.
