I got another copy of A Walk in the Woods (this makes number 6 from family members) from my aunt. When she asked my mom what I wanted my mom told her anything hiking related. This must be the default book for non-hikers to give. So now I have 6 books signed by relatives thru the years. On the bright side, inside the book was a $50 gift card to REI. :)

My dad told me the same thing as a young man in confidence, but that part of snapping it in half may have been to instill a little fear.

Big Nick came down and I got to touch his sac---I had my arms elbow deep in Santa's sac---and these items spilled forth:

** Kahtoola Microspikes, size medium.
** Standard load Smartwool Mountaineer socks---their thickest and my go-to always-pair for backpacking. Never have enough of these babies.

** Several used books to read on my next backpacking trip---here they are (and I'm excited as the only time I get to read a book is when I'm out on a trip): HELL'S ANGELS: The Life and Times of Sonny Barger and the Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club. Fun read. In The Hands of The Great Spirit: The 20,000 Year History of American Indians. Look forwards to this one. WESTMORELAND: The General Who Lost Vietnam. Definitely taking this one out on my next trip. IVAN'S WAR: Life and Death in the Red Army, 1939-1945. When it comes to WW2, everyone should know the history of Russia.

THE VANISHING FACE OF GAIA by James Lovelock. Tree hugging stuff. RIDIN' HIGH LIVIN' FREE: Hell-Raising Motorcycle Stories. Yes, another one by Sonny Barger of the Hell's Angels. THE KILLING OF CRAZY HORSE In depth history of the Lakota Indians. About three of these will keep me occupied for a good 20 day trip. PHYSICS OF THE FUTURE: How Science Will Shape Human Destiny and Our Daily Lives by the Year 2100, by Michio Kaku. Humanity probably won't be around by then but what the heck, Kaku is a interesting fellow.

** Turtle Fur fleece "tuque" hat. My first experience with turtle fur. Sorry they had to kill turtles to make these hats.

** North Face Power Stretch polartec gloves.

No new tent or boots or jackets or backpack or hiking poles or rain jacket or rain pants or whatever else.

A gift card from REI... which arrived early, so I was able to take advantage of the 30% off special and the free two-day shipping. YAY! Really did save me a lot of money and I was able to buy three items instead of two.

Also, I got a nice check that I will be able to put toward my zero days and hostel stays during my 2012 AT thru-hike. And a little more breathing room on my already tight budget. :)

Super comfortable and doesn't weigh much at all.

We've also acquired over the last 2 months:

* ULA Circuit for me - should be here this week, I'm beyond psyched!
* Marmot Aura 2P (actually sleeping in it tonight)
* Marmot PreCip jackets for us both
* Mt. Hardwear UltraLamina 0 bags for us both

We're not made of money, honestly - we just budget well. :D

A new Western Mountaineering Puma w/gore wind-stopper. I had been concerned about an upcoming winter outing and if my old WM bag would keep me warm. The Puma is my go-to winter bag in harsh conditions, but I have the microfiber edition, regular, with 36oz of down at 3 lbs 7oz total weight. The goretex must add 7 more ozs, and they list a regular as having 37 oz of down. Minor points. I don't know where they come up with the -25F rating---my Puma stops working FOR ME at around -10F.

Wow. From 1980 to 1987 I was "homeless" and living out of a backpack in the hills around Boone, NC. Then I found 40 acres in Sugar Grove and set up a canvas tipi with a woodstove for the next 15 years. Good old Boone.

I had weighed my bag and came up with 1 oz more than WM chart. My bag is a 6 ft one and the GWS adds about 5oz over the 6 ft microlite Puma. 3lb-7 vs 3lb-12 both having 35oz 850 down. The -25 F deg rating could be a WM misprint and maybe should be -25 deg C, making it closer to -13 deg F. I have no experience (yet) with this bag but I also have a liner which will help add approx 5-9 degs F into the total rating.
