Hi Everyone,

Since it is that time of year when 2012 NB thru-hikers are making final preparations for the trail, I thought it would be a good time to post a link to the website my wife and I created before we started our hike in 2008. The link below should take you to a full screen google map with the Appalachian trail highlighted and shelters shown. More detail and shelters are loaded as you zoom in. I hope some of you will find it helpful in planning and useful to your friends and family. If anyone finds sections which are incorrect and they have newer GPS coordinates, please send me a message and I can update the page. I apologize for having to add advertisements to the page, but it was the only way to help pay for the yearly hosting fees.

Good luck, be safe, and have fun!

This is fantastic! May I share it on Facebook or elsewhere so my family and friends can follow along with my 2012 thru-hike?

Absolutely! If you have a website or a place where you plan to post pics, please send it to me. My wife and I would love to follow you during your hike. Have a great trip!

Five million steps - yes! Nice resource Josh. Thank you.

I have been coming back to your website for a couple years. Sometimes I hold my breath, wondering if it will still be there since it is associated with your 2008 hike.

Thanks a million times five.

Josh, first off, thanks for the awesome map. It's incredibly useful, especially when talking to friends about my plans when they can't really grasp the idea of how far it is to walk from Springer to Katahdin.

I'm in the process of establishing a blog right now that I plan to update when I have the time, desire, and access to Internet, so people from home can more easily have an idea of what I'm up to. Using a combination of your map/geo-database and ifttt, I'm actually going to attempt to set up a simple relay where I can send a text from a pre-paid phone I'll have with me with a simple name of where I am (say, "Springer") to start. It would then initiate a search of locations/markers on the map you have created, select a likely candidate, and update the blog with a simple marker on a map with the timestamp. If I can manage to get it functioning correctly, I'll be sure to share the information, as it will probably be helpful to others as well.

Would you happen to have the information for just the AT? I'd just like to cut down on the number of potential mismatches as much as possible. If not, then I can probably set up a restriction to just that pool of data.

Thanks again!

While I can understand your desire to share collected information from your attempted thru-hike on your own web site, my preference is to use the Appalachian Trail Conservancy web site. The ATC has made exceptional efforts as a not for profit organization to provide both members and visitors interactive maps http://www.appalachiantrail.org/hiking/find-a-hike/interactive-map
They also provide us with extensive GIS and GPS information http://www.appalachiantrail.org/about-the-trail/mapping-gis-data/appalachian-trail-gis-gps-data.
Thank you ATC
