Ok, I passed about 500 of these packs on all you NOBOs out there two years ago. What sort of Pack cover works best?

On a similar note: Has anyone tried those new Glad Forcelfex bags? I know some people forgoed the pack cover and just had a trash bag lining their pack.

Thanks All,

It weighs 4 oz., but I think you could get by with a smaller size.

Finally, a trash bag that has a chance of holding up to light wear-and-tear. I might actually consider one of these if it's substantially lighter, although I'd rather have it in black!

Check out the small size silnylon from Equinox. That's what I used on my thru in 2003 and still do today. They fit the Vapor Trail perfectly and weigh about an ounce or so.

Take a look at the silnylon covers from Adventurelite (www.adventurite.com) which have velcro straps that go across the back of the pack (i.e. under the shoulder straps). This adds a tiny bit of weight but gives better protection on the sides if you are walking into the wind.

Maybe it's just me ...but that "adventurite" hyperlink didn't work.

Didn't work for me either, although it's spelled correctly.

Try this one: http://www.adventurelite.com/

They say that this one weighs in at 3 ounces.

YUP ...that link worked !!

$30.00. They're pretty proud of their pack covers. The one from Equinox was quite a bit less costly but I might consider adding my own velcro straps.

I have an Equinox silnylon pack cover (small, I think). It weighs 2.6 oz. in it's mesh sack. It has worked well. The VT, unlike other packs I have owned, does not wet out as fast. The rain just rolls off. Anyone have similar experience?

I have the same cover and I have noticed that the Vapor Trail seems to shed water better than other packs I've owned. About the only area of the pack that got and stayed wet was the pack bottom. Just to be on the safe side I always line my Vapor Trail with a plastic trash compactor bag. Main reason I use the silnylon pack cover is to shed light rain and avoid the pack fabric from wetting out and getting heavier.

Thanks for all the advice and help.

When carrying a down sleeping bag I always wrap that in a trash bag but don't usually put the rest of my gear in anything and just rely on the pack cover.

I used the ATC Hunter Orange pack cover which is made by equinox and it left a lot to be desired. yes, it kept me from getting shot but not from getting wet. That being said I'm willing to give them another chance because I know equniox is a good company.
