I've lived in N. Va since 97 and all I can tell you is prepare for the worse and hope for the best. Wholly unpredictable temp wise until late April and what I mean by that is pack for cold temps at night especially in higher elevations.
Rain gear? Absolutely.

I'm think late April early may for some cooler temps
I have camped with friends annually,, for decades now, 10 miles east of the Blue Ridge on what we jokingly call "the third rainy weekend in May". Temps have varied from below freezing to mid eighties.

convertible pants
smartwool long sleeve shirt
t-shirt
windshirt
mid or lightweight long undies (depending on you)
undies (if you were them)
bring some kind of insulated jacket, hat. I have also taken a fleece pullover, but that's optional
rain jacket
socks
