What a weird winter so far. In NC it's mid-sixties and at 8 PM on 12/31 I have my AC running. I did my conditioning training today in shorts and t-shirt! Tomorrow, New Year's Day is supposed to get close to 70. But by mid-week we're supposed to see mid-30 highs and lows around 20.

Same thing here. Probably be a good year to start a thru hike early. Who knows?

For me North is NY on up. (I hail from NY)
Mid is PA, MD, NJ
South to me is VA on down. Esp when it gets on to summer. HOT and humid

Talk about wierd - I've got trees standing in soft, muddy ground right now that are toppling over in 20 MPH winds when they should be locked into reasonably frozen ground! Not the best kind of situation for hiking (or sleeping outdoors). Maybe the Mayans are right about 2012....
Breaking a daily high at least once a week up here. Broke 50degF just the other day.
yup been nice here too its 38F no snow no rain got mud and the wood stove is out i was thinking i run out of wood before spring guess i was wrong may have some left over

we have a hanging planter outside from mothers day and the thing still has a few purple and yellow viola flowers. its gonna be 50 today something like 45ish tomorrow but only mid 20s for tues and wed. saturday the 6th is forcast to be 48 and sunny. we are in a pattern that brings warmer weather in every weekend and its been going on for close to two months now, maybe more. check the weather archives and you will notice the pattern...

Feels like we've had two fairly unusual winters in a row. This time last year we had bout thirty inches of snow on the ground in Connecticut and the lows were near zero (f). Now it's new years day and I'm getting ready to hop into my kayak in the Housatonic as soon as the fog clears.
Here in Connecticut, the big chill is expected mid-week, but just yesterday I noticed something I've never seen in decades of gardening: new rhubarb pushing up out of the ground. Normally, that happens in April. We've had many days where temps have been in the 409s and 50s.

Yep - here in Pa., some of the trees are trying to bud, and a few forsythia bushes are pushing flowers. I'm thinking that this can't be a good thing in the long run.
Yep. I have flowering forsythia in a vase on the dining table right now. And we are still clearing downed limbs from the October snowstorm! Weird, weird, weird.

If this weather keeps up, it will be a poor year for Maple syrup production.
If your maples start uprooting like our oaks down here, it could be a few poor DECADES for maple syrup production! I've got one that's threatening to crush our hiking club's cabin near Rt. 501 - a huge monster that was probably a sapling when the cabin was built back in the mid-1930's! I just pray that it doesn't topple over any more until I can get it stabilized with some wire-cable back-guys...and the wind is picking up down here!:eek:
I live about 60 miles south of the AT in Georgia and today it was 65 with it going down to 29 tonight. The weather can't seem to make up it's mind....
it's certainly related to climate change - I just got back from a run (in GA - 80 miles or so south of Springer) - shirtless and completely comfortable - the air smelled like Spring but people still have Christmas lights up! it's very disturbing.

Nearly 50 here in the Berkshires yesterday, like Papa D said, smells like spring, even the birds were singing. Tonight there is a cold front coming through, next couple of days will be below normal - single digits at night teens during the day but the extended forecast is for it to warm up to the 40's again next weekend. Most of our lakes are still wide open which I can never remember this time of year.

We are about to have a pretty drastic change. We get a good amount of Northeast weather in Central NH. The line for the snowfall amounts ususallu falls just south of us around Manchester/Nashua. The 10 day forecast shows a dramatic shift from the warm weather to a couple of bitterly cold days but not the typical Northeast winter. I do feel like the snow is coming in the next few weeks. The lake effects are starting bit late in NY and VT but I feel like the heavy snows will be here soon but will only be concentrated to a couple of months as opposed to a few. Im ready for the snow.
Very warm up North. Thats a good thing.

Year long anomalies in localized weather patterns do not a climate change make. We've had both - years without winter AND years without summer in New England before. Seriously, I am open to both "camps" when it comes to this issue, and we may be in a cycle of warming, but the really long term prognosis is that we are still in an interglacial period. I don't discount that there is likely some added warming due to human influence - but I don't think our activities will stop the return of another ice age in the future.

Really, we are only officially 10 days into winter! Just wait until January, February and March! Winter hasn't even started yet! Mid 60's and you have your AC on?! I don't turn my AC on until it's in the 80's! It's going down to 17 tonight here in east TN, which means it's going to be close to 10 degrees on the trail!

Funny how October here, 23 inches of snow then Nov and Dec were the lowest snowfalls in recorded weather keeping, at least according to WMUR
Mid 60's and you have your AC on?! I don't turn my AC on until it's in the 80's!Thermal heating from sun on roof raises inside temperature in the house. 60s outside often raises inside to high 70s.

Bare ground in northern NH. I barebooted a mountain just south of the whites New Years day. On of the folks ended up wearing shorts and T-shirt. Second New Years day in a row for unusually warm temps. We get payback tommorow night, its expected to be 10 deg F.
46*F at 3AM. I wrote it on the calendar.
Payback + wind coming here also.
I am fine with bare ground.:)

This isn't all that unusual. Maybe 1 out of every 3 or 4 winters we don't have (usually lose the existing snow) snow on the ground around New Years day. It's still usually b@!!s high to a 10 ft Ind--Native American by the end of Feb.
One year I had spinach come up on 1/9. I'll reserve judgement on the season until April.:)

I'm thinking that this can't be a good thing in the long run.I have a tree in my backyard, I've yet to identify the species, that losses its leaves at the first sign of cold weather, it has already shed all its leaves despite the very mild winter. However, yesterday I noticed that it too was beginning to bud and even had a few tiny leaves that had sprouted. Be really curious if it survives this little cold snap.
Stupid trees, been around for millions of years and they still get fooled:D

its friggin cold down here in s carolina. it must be 10 below:p:p kidding but it is cold. i was going to springer mtn but i forgot my 0 degree antelope and only have my phantom 45. not gonna cut it on springer or north of springer. so like i said last night im off to florida today after droping my son off at fort jackson...c,mon everyone its a new year get off the computer and do some hikiing....
its warmer in connecticut than s carolina, now thats crazy....at least it was monday at 4:00am...
well, it just got cold in GA - I was out this morning at 6 am - my back steps iced up - I guess it's winter time

I checked the temps yesterday in Asheville, and there was a 1 degree difference from where I live. Something ain't right in the universe. Warmest winter here in a long time.
It has been very dry in Washington state. Low snow pack-VERY low!
My husky is finally happy; temps hit 8 degrees this morning in sw connecticut. Time to get out the seed catalogs and plan for spring.
What's wierd up here is that most folks have already taken their Christmas lights down, and there really hasn't been snow yet. River hasn't frozen yet and the Millidgeville Ferry is still running. Today and tonight might do it though. I should have been out skiing for a couple of weeks by now. Bummer. I am not sure how atypical this is. I've been skating in December, but I've also seen the Millidgeville Ferry run into January before, at least once. It is only 2012. Things shouldn't be getting to weird just yet. Another 10 or 20 years could be quite different. Interesting times.
