Its currently ( between Woody and Neel Gap @ 4:45am) 10 Degrees, with a steady 16mph wind(have had gusts to 24mph) and its NOT even the coldest part of the morning yet... Snow and a HARD frost right now @ 1840 elevation... For all those who started the trail on New Years Day I hope you heeded the advice to bring a Zero Degree bag :D... Check out FatMan's Link... He lives SOUTH of me... lol...

It was 18 degrees this AM, with a wind chill, when the dogs and I went out to run. I could feel the freezing cold pavement through my running shoes. I can't imagine being on the trail now. I am a wimp when it comes to cold weather, especially my hands. More power to you, if you be out there.

It's going to be a three dog night up here in the Whites tonight. The propane guy better show up today or I'll have to go out and find me three dogs!

Hey Toli...My first question is why were you up at 4:45? Have you lost your mind?:D

On Saturday it looked like winter would never come. It was sunny and we even made it to 60 degrees. But it certainly arrived last night. We had a low temp of 11.5 degrees with below zero wind chills. I didn't see anyone on the trail yesterday in my neck of the woods so unless the New Years thru hikers are taking it real slow I am thinking nobody started NYD. But if they did they now know how cold it can get in Georgia.

Georgia's official low was recorded on January 27, 1940 at -17 degrees. That was in North Floyd County at an elevation of only 1,000 feet. Needless to say, it has been colder at elevation but there are not too many weather stations at elevation:)

I was on the trail last week in Georgia for what I think was the first snow of the season-- 2" at Deep Gap. The weather was spectacular for the two days following. Just called my buddy so we could congratulate ourselves on picking last week instead of this week to hike the trail. Sometimes you're the bug, sometimes the windshield!

I know! I'm 10 miles from Allen's Gap, (Greeneville, TN), and it will be 12 tonight in the lower elevations. All these people talking about what a warm winter we are having! Winter has just begun, officially it started only 2 weeks ago. It's going to be a long next three months!! I'm staying in today and dehydrating my leftover black eyed peas!

I was day hiking last week in GSMNP. About 4 inches of snow at Newfound Gap. Wished I had crampons on Alum Cave Bluff trail (really icy on almost all of that trail, fell, bruised shoulder, hip and knee). Great hiking weather though.

Tonight, calling for 18 degrees in Tallahassee, FL, it is already below freezing.

it's 5F here now and I certainly wouldn't want to be camping in it in most cases.

It got pretty cold (and windy here) last night so I decided to experiment with sleep systems (I never get tired of trying out different combinations of clothes and bags) in the back yard. It was 12 degrees with a 15-20 mph. wind. The stars were bright and I saw a meteor fall. I got the first "snotsicles" of the year in my moustache - a milestone! :D

It's 21 degrees in The Ocala National Forest this morning. I'm still in my sleeping bag waiting for the sun to warm things up.

After you find the laundry you need to hang frozen in the basket by the back door, you will get up in the night to charge the stove.:)

It was -16C this morning ( 3 deg F ). Still cold out there, and windy, but at least its sunny.
Been meaning to go for a walk and test out some layers, and my new hat.

Freeze warnings for central Florida tonight. Mine as well get out & go hiking up north. I figured it'd be my best chance to try out my gear before my thru attempt in April. Hiked about 28 miles including arout 13 at night. By the time I reached camp I had frost on the outside of my pack. A couple major discoveries: my dog needs extra cover at night & I need gloves now.

Its Cold... nah, not anymore. Hiked down to Cooper Gap and back today and by noon I was in a t-shirt and shorts. A beautiful clear sunny day that topped out in the low 60s. What a great day for a hike.

Saw my first NOBO this morning. He started the Approach Trail on Tuesday and said his water bottles froze while hiking. His trail name is appropriately "Cold Start". I'm sure he was thinking *** today. A change of 40 degrees in temp in less than three days.

Supposed to be warm and rainy for the next several days down on this end of the trail. :)

It's warming up here, again. Highs around 50 today. Time to get the bike out.

If winter doesn't get its act together we might have to cancel the AMC XC beginner weekend in southern NH. It's scheduled for the first weekend in Feb.
