View Full Version : Reading comprehension and replying to a thread
How important is reading comprehension when replying to a thread?

I agree! Oh the craziness.
Joking aside, though... it's the internet. I think comprehension and the like is sort of "optional" for the most part.
I would use dry comprehension sacks myself instead! :D

I don't see how reading applies to sewing thread.

So you know how many g/cm the thread weighs. You know, he's trying to go uber-UL.
It is more important to interpret the general drift of the tread in a manner which supports your personal obsessions.

I don't know about the AT, but the outslope of the tread is supposed to be about 2-3 degrees.

How important is reading comprehension when replying to a thread?Depends, If the thread title mentions hiking poles, guns, dogs/leashes or inexperienced hikers asking if they should bother carrying an extra pound of potentially life saving gear, then why bother reading the rest? It's more fun just to shout our opinions at eachother ;-)

Before I reply, I do the following:
Eat some Bacon
Weigh my gear to see about reducing another gram
Eat more Bacon
Dig a hole and bury my TP
Eat some Bacon
Figure out my base weight
East some Bacon
Then reply to the thread... If I feel like it, I may check to see if my bananas are dancing...
Then decide if I have some input

I could die before ever getting a chance to reply if I took the time to actually read a thread. Then I would regret it for eternity.
I'm guilty of looking at a thread title, figuring I know who has already replied and knowing what they said.... I'm right a lot of the time actually.
I think most long time, frequent posters have their niche category that they usually chime in on.
For example, I generally always reply to threads that have anything to do with the financial end of hiking - it's just an interest.

Hmmm, Reading , Sewing, Threading, and this guy had a Math quiz (see below) all I want to do is take a hike! Is there going to be a test ?
(I'll narrow it down a bit, based on my own experience.
Take whatever weight, naked, would give you a BMI of 22.5
Divide that by your current wieght, plus all your gear and clothing, and half your consumables.
Multiply that fraction by 20 miles per day.
So, for myself, ideally 165, currently 215 plus say 25 pounds of stuff. 20 x 165/240 = 13.75 miles per day would be a good estimate for planning purposes. )

Wow - this might be the quote of the day --- what the F? , well, let's see my BMI actually is 22.5 so I divided by my naked weight by by ideal and I get ONE (1) 148/148 + gear = 30 lbs so that's 20 x 148/178 = 16.6 miles a day -- hey, it actually sort of works.

I sometimes quickly respond to the first question in a post only to realize that it wasn't the one that the OP was REALLY interested in getting an answer to.
I get a kick out of the "Hatfield and McCoy" feuds that pop up from time to time, when answering the question isn't as important as winning the arguement. We get to know each others' pet peeves and sometimes we can't help ourselves. Sometimes a tongue in cheek comment is misconstrued as biting sarcasm and then we're off to the races until the mods step in. It's our own dysfunctional family.

Apparently not important.
Interesting that "What?" is in the poll lead as of this posting! I think the clear, to the point question is: "Why do people say things in a comment window that they would never say in person, in their face, to someone?" It's the anonymity of the Internet that has made us all (myself included) social buffoons. Politeness and respect are thrown out the window when you know you will never have to look your target in the eye!

There is a second school of thought that would say the internet has increased the freedom of speech, albeit at the sacrifice of violating the in-person social buffoonery and politeness taboos. Add that this anonymous freedom also gives rise to whining from the oversensitive element, whining that would just as often be taboo under in-person social mores. Is there a better balance to be struck? Probably.

I don't think there is any more freedom of speech via the internet than there is in face-to-face communication. I think there is less inhibition and that creates more problems than it does benefits.

I don't think there is any more freedom of speech via the internet than there is in face-to-face communication. I think there is less inhibition and that creates more problems than it does benefits.I would argue that if people are less inhibited then by definition they are more likely to speak up. They are also free to yell, tell lies, and even act out, of course ;). But as with any increased freedom, there is the responsibility to self-discipline. And no, in general, we don't seem to be particularly good at that part all of the time. But interent communication isn't face-to-face conversation, it isn't a letter, and it isn't "the written word" - it's something between a conversation and a shouted out comment (akin to a Parliament debate) taking place in an atmosphere of partial anonymity - and it has and is still evolving it's own rules.

Thank you, it was all my pleasure. My pastor showed it to a small bible discussion group at her house. One woman was angry at the rest of us because she didn't "get it". Unfortunately, many of us decided that the ability to communicate was worth the effort of learning at a young age. I had an interest in language, so I pursued it. It hasn't put any money into my pocket, but life is a lot bigger than "stuff", and I like to learn new things, which requires a constant expansion of my working vocabulary.
In the grand scheme of things, I consider myself to be lacking in information on subjects outside of my interests, and feel compelled to learn something about what other folks "are into", so I can be a more useful piece in the machinery of life.
I even learned a couple of things about golf. :D
Math? I'll pay out of my meager income to have others do that for me. ;)
