I had major problems on a long hike in Spain with my tendons got really swollen from the constant little taps by the rear support, couldn't walk. Worked behind a counter in a hotel for two weeks to recover then started again, problem flaired upa almost immediately, I cut the kinda M-shaped support bit at the back top part of the shoes and then no problem at all for 400 miles!!!

Walked 12 miles yesterday and same thing happened in my running shoes but much less as only walked 1 day. Plan on buying my 2012 thru trail shoes today and don't really want to massacre them as soon as I buy them! Any advice or shared experience?

Diff model of shoe. I have had that happen. Pressure on the achilles right? Very memorable.

Put 2 brands side by side, one should be lower in the back.

I cut the heel tabs off all my running and trail running shoes. If that's how your body is shaped ya gotta cut the shoe. It's stupid to hurt yourself and save the shoe.

Maybe try hiking in sandals? I know a couple people who have, using varying levels of socks/waterproof socks/no socks, and it worked great for them.

two days after i stopped it was so bad I could actually hear my tendons creak like an old door. scary. Thought it was just those shoes then happened again with Nike runners yesterday. cheers

Yo stroll yourself to a doctor, you might could have tendinosis not tendinitis and while cutting your shoes may help it is likely not the cause.FaReel

Shoe surgery is pretty common. I usually have to excise the insoles at my little toes for just a smidgen more room there. Good deal you found an easy solution, bummer it took so long.

And how do feel about corn pasta?

No problem, WebMd and YouTube are the next best thing for people considering the self-diagnosis route. (insert disclaimer here).

I've done that (cutting down the middle of the heel) before, with old shoes in the middle of a long section hike.

If you're buying new, check out something with a shallower heel cup or try wearing an insert to raise your heel a bit.
