Keep your eye out for Elk in Southwestern Virginia/Northeast Tennessee. http://www2.swvatoday.com/news/2011/dec/20/elk-killed-bland-county-ar-1557506/

This elk had to cross the AT to get to where he was killed. Virginia has been contemplating stocking elk in Virginia. Last I heard from a game warden, they were going to start stocking them in some counties of VA. Would be neat to run into a herd of these guys in the high meadows.

The Elk that were placed in the GSMNP have been tracked to Hot Springs and other locations - maybe they are roaming even further!

I think the VA elk are from a stocking by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

They are. Virginia was worried about diseases killing off deer populations, but have now gotten in place a plan to stock 75 elk in Buchanan County, VA

Interesting for sure and they almost certainly did come from Kentucky. Here's a pieceof trivia...the grandfather of the current owner of Woods Hole Hostle was originally given that land early 1900s by the DGIF or whatever it was called back then to essentially conduct a census of the elk population. How nice that the family kept the land and stayed "with" the land huh?
