I know it's a little early in the year but I'm sure some plans are forming.
Who all is planning an E2E in 2012? I know of 3-4 myself included, so who all is going to be out there this year? Should we start a list/roll call?

My daughter and I are trying to see if we can get enough time off (3 to 4 weeks, yeah we're slow) in mid-August to mid-September to E2E. If not we'll probably hike the northern part SOBO down to Maine Junction as we've both hiked the southern part already.

Perfect start date for a SOBO, should be a great hike! I want to do an End-to-End starting at the beginning of September myself, doesn't look like I will be able to do it this year, but I'll still be out on the trail alot :)

I'm likely to be doing the LT northbound - probably leaving mid to late July.

I end to ended the LT Nobo - it's the best way -- I do understand 10K and other's SOBO though - thru hikers that have recently hiked the AT sec of the trail and want to insure that they complete the terrain north of Rutland / Killington ..... the trail does set up better S-N though - hiking gets harder, more dramatic, scenic, and impressive (above tree line) the further north you get - recommended!

Hey Arron; I went SOBO about 4 years ago and started around the same time as you are planning. I was about 1 week ahead of the foliage change. And that particular time of year there are often groups from private schools or colleges doing orientation. What a beautiful walk it will be.

What's everyone planning on doing for town/resupply stops? We are planning on....

1. Morrisville
2. Waitsfield
3. Rutland
4. Manchester Center

Probably head into Richmond as well for some pizza, figured Morrisville over Johnson as it's a full size town with motel and supermarket, restaurants, etc...

What are others planning on doing?

The Long Trail could be hiked in 10 days - that would be 27 miles per day with no breaks - seems like a real shame. Re-supply isn't that difficult - we did it in 25 days (including breaks) which was a nice pace - we could have easily pared that to about 19 or 20 days but the hiking is hard and it is beautiful - not sure why you would want to do it much faster unless you are an ultra-marathoner with some speed goal in mind. I believe that the Long Trail record is 4 1/2 days which is about 60 miles per day - good luck with that!

This is easy:

Manchester Center (easy hitch)
Inn at Long Trail ($5 shuttle from their door to Rutland)
Waitsfield (hitch) or Jonesville P.O. (choose one)
Johnson - grocery, laundry, and PO in same building

Yeah I'm with you mate...4 resupply stops, but will probably go into Morrisville over Johnson, they have a cheap (for Vermont) motel and a supermarket. Last time I hiked we did the 80 mile carry between Rutland and Jonesville...no thanks. Perhaps a last splurge at Bennington!

I agree. Im going to start on Friday July 27 out of Williamstown probably try to get to Congdon first day. I really love tenting on top of Glastonbury so that would put me at a pretty good day for my second day the shooting for somewhere between Stratton and Stratton Pond for day 3. I will def be staying at Green Mountain unless I just burn those miles in the morning really quickly. If I do, Ill just make it for Bromley but that one of those decision I can't make now cuz I just dont know how I will feel. Ill go into Rutland from Long Trail Inn so I plan on packing heavy for 4-5 days. Ill zero at Long Trail Inn with my wife. Im looking forward to hopefully taking a trip to the Brewery. From there Ill pack heavy and shoot for Waitsfield. Ill meet my wife in Jonesville and she will have a drop for me. She is going to join me for the end for a week so we have a really open schedule because we will have 5-7 days to finish so we can just take our time. We will resupply in Johnson and that should do it.

Most years in mid-April, you'll hit snow and ice at around 3,000 feet. This year, it'll probably be clear, but it's been a strange spring.

I would second the mud comment. In April, you'll sink down to China in the Vermont mud. However, if we continue to have a dry-ish spring, perhaps late May might be ok from a mud perspective.

Shouldn't be any trouble. Even taking into account two travel-days to get to and from the termini, you have 24 days to hike. I'm of the view that 19 days is tight, but 23 or 24 is plenty for a guy in okay shape to finish the trail and enjoy the trip.

I just bought my Amtrak ticket, bound for Pittsfield Mass. on August 13. From there I'll hitch 20 miles north to Williamtown. I will be starting NOBO on the 14th.
I'll be traveling from Sandusky Ohio (near Cedar Point). The ticket was only $61. Beats the Greyhound price of $80, and is only 12 hours instead of 16 with 5 transfers to different buses through the night.
The only down side is my wife has to get me to the train station by 3:30am.
But that's part of the fun.
I hope to see everyone one the trail!

Enjoy the bugs :)

Yep. The May long weekend is approximately peak time for black flies. As a bonus, the mosquitoes should just be starting around then too. By mid-June when smachia is nearing Journey's End, the black flies should be mostly gone, but the mosquitoes will be out in full force!

Given the choice, I almost prefer the black flies because at least they sleep at night. The mosquitoes keep buzzing around your head unless the temperature at night goes down into the high-30s or low-40s. That pretty much means that you gotta sleep in a tent, not the shelters.

So my cousin had to bail due to her summer job so i'm hoping to find some folks of similar ability to go NOBO with.. my kickoff date is pretty flexible but late july would be nice.

at least at the start probably 10-15/day? 2-3mph? hoping to do the Pemi loop soon so that will give me a better indication on harder stuff again.

getting close.. all this rain the water should be fine.. hopefully mud will dry up some.

Yes, that's been my experience. By 6, sometimes earlier, the BFs are gone. It's incentive to get going early in the morning before they stir.

We are going into Morrisville for a motel and resupply, then just maildrop at Jonesville, then into Waitsfield, Rutland, Manchester Center, weather and foot pain will determine if we stay overnight in those towns I suspect : )

I remember going down south from Jay Peak after a night-long rainfall a few years ago. It was such a scary event that I literally had to look for a sturdy footing for ten seconds before making the next move. That part of the trail was like a running stream on a steep and smooth rocky surfaces. I couldn't make it down without holding some tree trunks nearby, but luckily didn't fall.

Is there any bupass trail around Camels Hump? I didn't notice that if any. I surely thought about taking the bypass when approaching Mt. Mansfield under a bad weather, but decided to push on not wanting to miss the peak, or rehike it later some day. The visibility on top of Mt. Mansfield seemed only a few hundred feet. My luck again! there's no rain, only a gale of wind.

A few times I distinctly remember thinking that the LT isn't really a trail you want to hike solo...and definitely not if you're inexperienced.

"Slippery when wet" is an understatement :) I haven't had good traction since I stopped wearing my Limmer boots with the old fashion Vibram lug soles. Maybe it's because I learned to hike on rugged New England trails that I find most other trails not very challenging and some what boring.

Oh, there is a bad weather by-pass around the Hump, but I don't think its a whole lot easier, although you do avoid that insane, exposed section on the south side of the Hump. (going up it's not bad, but coming down is another story!).

The only thing that bothered me about camels hump was the crazy climb.

Yeah, the LT ate the tips of my poles too. Actually, it turns out they had pushed up into the lower tubing. I was wondering what was moving around in there. Without tips, the poles tend to slide off the rocks, so you have to be careful how thier placed if you need the support to keep from falling. Just one more thing to pay attention too. No daydreaming on the LT! I finally got to replace my tips at Manchester Center.

I still find it odd that you guys had your pole tips all beat up. maybe because mine are Carbide and not normal steel.. mine barely show any wear at all in the 2 years i've used them, LT, NH granite.. etc

Mine were a few years old already and had a few thousand miles on them.

Oh man, the trails in the northeast EAT hiking poles. The tips wear out and the shafts get bent. I finally finished off what were my roughest pair of poles in the 'dacks in late August. I was on a herd path and was climbing a typical northeast rockface, and fell backwards 10 feet and landed on my a$$. Meanwhile, my right pole got caught in a rock-crack and is now bent 90-degrees.

You know you've had a great summer when all of your gear is khacked.:D:D:D:D

The tips themselfs were okay, it's just that they pushed up and through the plastic holder at the bottom of the pole. That seems to be the weak link. I saw a lot of hikers who no longer even had the plastic ends on thier poles. I suppose once the tip breaks out or push up through the plastic holder, taking the plastic end off actually helps give you some grip. I've seen a lot of bent poles too. Easy to catch the end between rocks or roots.

I guess I am just nicer to mine. Mine are carbon... they won't bend just snap if it goes too far. I have a feel for when it's not going to unstick and let go of the handle so it wont break. another on my long list why i don't use straps.

Finished my End to End of The Long Trail last Friday. A totally successful hike. Meet some great people out on the trail. The weather wasn't great (rained 14 of the last 15 days) but I dealt with it pretty well. I had snow on the last day at higher elevations. As others have said it was slippery,My record was 9 falls on one rainy day.The trail was very, very wet. I lost 14 lbs. on the hike which helps me get closer to my pre thru hike goal. Only been off the trail a few days and already miss it.
