It's a gathering of disreputable people - in other words, a place for hiker trash to get together to eat, hike and talk trail. This weekend there will be a ruck in north carolina and in two weeks there will be a ruck in Virginia. There have been rucks in Florida, Colorado, Pennsylvania, etc. Lots of fun.

I'm surprised you haven't heard of them, Dave the sailor - it's a truck with oars. :D

Hi...

"Ruck" is also shorthand for rucksack...a back or shoulder pack in Military use since the Civil War...through present.

I've always thought of Ruckus when I hear Ruck.

How much they hike varies. At Pine Grove we always did a 5 mile hike up to Pole Steeple and back. There were often people who did longer hikes as well. A couple of years ago a few people backpacked in from Caledonia. In NOC there are usually folks doing a long group hike and some who just go up the AT as far as they feel like going. That's probably what will happen at Bears Den. We won't be there, and I don't know if someone else wants to organize a group hike. If not, just head out Saturday morning as far as you want. There is usually a soup lunch, but if you miss that, there is always extra food around. People usually bring a lot of food to share.
