I'm thinking I'll drive down to the southern terminus of the trail (abt 400 miles), get a decent room, and take some day hikes near the end of the trail. About 10 years ago I went to Mountain Crossings and hiked the trail out to Blood Mtn Shelter while I was camping at Dockery Lake.
Any suggestions on a decent place to stay with good food nearby ?? Also some good 5 to 10 mile day hikes. Not the approach trail.
Thanks... Al

Thanks Hoop. It looks really nice, but I'm looking for more privacy.

In Blairsville GA, you're got a Holiday Inn Express, Best Western and Seasons Inn(http://www.seasons-inn.com/).

Lots of hiking near by including Blood Mt and Brasstown Bald (highest pt in GA).

Not sure if that is what you are looking for.

Thanks Royalusa.. More what I was thinking.
I was also looking at the Amicalola Falls Lodge and Unicoi Lodge guest rooms. Rates aren't bad... Which one do you prefer ??

Sorry Brotheral, I don't know about either Amicalola Falls Lodge or Unicoi Lodge. Sounds like you might be trying to stay someplace other than a traditional hotel/motel. The only other place I can think of off the top of my head, but have not stayed at, is Kilin Tyme Cabins - http://www.kilin-tyme-cabins.com/index.html. They are located in Blairsville GA, which puts you around 20 minutes from the AT crossings of Neels Gap, Tesnatee Gap, Hogpen Gap and Chatahoochee Gap (2.5 mile side trail to gap) and within perhaps 30 minutes of Unicoi Gap and Woody Gap. In addition to the AT there is GA's highest point with a viewing tower, Brasstown Bald (a .7 mile hike from the parking lot or a 12-mile round trip from Trackrock Road) and several smaller waterfall hikes. Not sure if that helps you at all.

Hiker Hostel has private rooms for 40 bucks I think. I stayed there over thanksgiving with 4 other people and it was an awesome experience. It is not a "hostel". Its a luxury log cabin B&B for the price of a hostel.
